Interesting Application for FAST HD video encoding!

More Info on CodecSys CE-10

To quote, roughly translated: The conversion of video footage in Full HD movies at a resolution of 1920 x 1080 provides current desktop CPUs with a lengthy task. This allows the transcoding of a movie sometimes half a day.

In comes Linux Developer Fixstars with a video converter called CodecSys CE-10, which was to encode movies into MPEG-4-AVC format (H.264)

The Cell processor uses a PlayStation 3 - this format will be predominantly on Blu-ray media or IP-TV via video-stream uses. The CE-10-encoder sends out from a Windows PC, the output data via Ethernet to the console, which finished the encoded data back to th? (the PC)

PS3 Cell Processor faster than i7 965 XE

the Cell processor of the Playstation a performance of 29 FPS, that is 1.2 times real-time conversion - the cell has a similar performance as the CUDA Badaboom encoder in combination with an Nvidia Geforce GTX-285

By comparison, Intel's current top-CPU, the Core i7 965 XE, does it still at 18 FPS - normal desktop CPUs even create only about 5 FPS

ategory: PlayStation 3 A novel transcoding tool Fixstars (PDF) allows for the conversion of video material on the Full HD format, with the help of a PlayStation 3 in real time, is coming in June 2009.

PS3 as external accelerator - Fixstars CodecSys CE10 'faster than reatime' encoder

Just chatting with a friend about encoding which he's getting into, and looking up Cell development, I found FixStars are releasing an encoder, the CodecSys CE-10, that runs on PS3 connected to PC as an accelerator over Gigabit. They reckon 1.2x realtime speed at Full HD! Most importantly it means someone's using PS3 as an external accelerator 'board'. This paves the way for other applications to use PS3 as such (my dream of PS3 as a softsynth lives on!)

A fast nVidia card with Badaboom is very quick too.

That was mentioned but the PS3 is the better choice for this function it seems. Anyway interesting developments! Soon you will buy a GPU with embeded windows 7 :D

Give IAP a break, its not like he is fibbing or anything, he is only stating the facts.
The point is that this performance on this type of specialised task is not unexpected. Try the Cell on general purpose tasks against the same processor. I also can't tell from this how many Cells they were using for the task.

Another pointless comparison from IAP. Keep it up, buddy! You never fail to impress.

And you never fail to show blatant idiocracy. Take your jealous bias somewhere else.

I merely posted a article of yet another applied application using the power of the PS3. Its not what I do its what others have done with succsess.

Is that so. Now who would have though that a R5000.00 piece of "junk" can be used for such a specialised task that would have cost tens of thousands before. You fail to see the bigger picture. The PS3 in a mini super computer at a bargain price. NO ONE STAYED that it is better or can replace the I7.

yeah its a super computer compared to super computers from over 10 years ago, which would make the 360 one as well, and the wii if you compared it to 20 year old supercomputers, so yeah everything is a supercomputer, if you go back long enough in time

Just trolling I see. Bored?
not as much as you going comparing apples with oranges.

so even the abacus where super computer

its like having a ferrari engine in an uno. Xbox ftw

Unfortunately the Xbox is only good for gaming. NOTHING ELSE.

By end next week we will know if at all the Xbox would have any relevant future games titles in store to make a purchase worthwhile.

Well like the uno as vehicle the PS3 is a good and versatile powerhouse fuctioning as a extremely good games console and on top of it a Superb home theathre and multi media device with the apparent versatility to be used as a mini supercomputer for specific tasks. (See links)

Allas Xbox fanatics do not have the mentality or brain capacity to grasp such concepts so they end up just trolling.

I'm amazed at the cr@p u had to put up with, with the SLIM sales teh way they look, either many of these previous fanboy's will be converted or they will find the numbers evening out quite a bit...gonna have to look like sulky girls with the wrong system to a much broader community (won't be ps3 vs 360..it's gonna be 360 vs everyone else)...

I was looking for Nduisimo's claim about cell can't handle graphics and came across this thread via google....it is interesting and not only are panels using cell for graphics processing but it's their preferred choice..adn you can't argue with the likes of Toshiba....

Interesting read though...especially Cell vs I7....just shows the value ...not that i needed any further proof than when i found out that I'm buying a electronics product less than what it cost the chinese to build....when u in that scenario, it's a BARGAIN!

I have to say though... I would love to see Gears of War on a powerful console such as the PS3. Revamped, better textures, etc...
