make sure the ext hdd is FAT32 and not NTFS

it will not pick up a NTFS drive i'm afraid

if the drive is larger the 32gb you will need to use a program to format it like swissknife or check your HDD manufactures site if they have tools, as windows can only fomat a maximu of 32GB to fat 32

No you don't. The 32GB limitation is only during the XP setup process. The max FAT32 size 8TB.
