PS3 Fireware 2.53 released

You need a PC to enable the media centre extender capabilities of the 360 yes.

However, the functionality is there quote pro quo.

And you can also load divx/xvid files stand alone via USB stick/HDD.

So now what is the total cost of ownership?

R3500.00 Console
R3000.00 Minimum for PC
R3000.00 For a BluRay drive
Some extra's for software and maybe more hardware like a decent GPU

Thus do some calculations and compare that final resultant specs with the specs of a standalone PS3 for R5000.00

As you say "quote pro quo" thanks for conceding.
Facts cannot be argued away and thanks for not resorting to the level of some other Xbots mode of debating.

Huh? You can just shove whatever media into the xbox and go standalone. You don't have to have a PC, and the xbox is much more compatible with divx movies than the ps3 is.
 
Netflix? You have to queue up your downloads via PC

Please explain as to why the xbox is much more compatible with divx movies than the ps3 is.

Cause half the time when i'm playing a divx movie on my PS3, every two minutes it skips about 2 seconds of movie, it also loses audio/video sync on certain movies. I gave up even trying the PS3, now i just chuck everything in the xbox.
 
That's weird considering that all my DivX files play without any hitches on my PS3. Maybe you've got a dud. ;)
 
same thing happens on my mates, we setup tversity to get around it.

FULL list of updates to v2.53

The new firmware update for the PS3 will be released today. Firmware v2.53 will contain many changes to your system settings. The full list of changes will be categorized under each of your XMB sections.

Users

You now have an option to set the PS3 to turn off automatically after a background download or installation of content. This option is available when you turn off the system while content is being downloaded or installed.
Settings

BD/DVD has been renamed to Video Settings
Sequential Playback has been added as an option under Video Settings
Divx VOD Registration Code has been added under System Settings
Power Save Settings have been added as an option for the system and controllers. They can now be set to shut off after a certain period of time
The method for connecting Bluetooth devices has been changed
You can now choose German, French (Canada) and French (Switzerland) keyboard types
You can now select printers that support network connectivity including HP printers using the HP option
Music

You can now select one of nine volume output levels using the control panel
Scene Search has been added as an option on the control panel
Mosquito Noise Reduction has been added for video content that is saved on the hard drive or storage media
During BD and DVD playback, a technique known as chroma upsampling is now automatically selected based on the movement of objects within the video to enhance images
Game

Playback quality of some PS3 format software has been improved
Text entry issues that have occurred on screen with Bluetooth keyboard have been addressed
Trophies can now be synced with the server
Pressing the PS button now allows you, on most PS3 format software, to view information from the Settings and Connection Status List option under Netwrok Settings
Network

Your internet browser will now support Adobe Flash Player content
Full screen support has been added to Adobe Flash Player 9
Playstation Network

The way to disable the automatic sign-in option and sign out have been changed
Button designs have been changed on the Playstation Store along with the addition of a Redeem Codes button
Friends

You can now view information about the most recent sign-in for friends
 
congrats on the update PS3 users. but why oh why would you want to use a PS3 for internet browsing?? (honest question)

dear god it's like attaching a blender to my xbox. it is utterly useless IMHO. applaud thyself, for thy (or is it thee?) have bluray and nothing more to boast about. damn i should maybe lay off of the beer after gym. *self-RAS*. :D

The PS3 had a browser from launch why do we have internet on our cell phone because it convenient and there if you need it and I'm guess you don't own a PS3 so your opinion is abit uninformed try it before you knock it ok :p
 
it just feels, erm... wrong to me, accessing internet on your tv (and even your phone for that matter) - but i guess that's just me. :p

Try it on a HD TV oooooooh aaaaaahhh. I also thought it was weird till I tried it but it grows on you :D
 
another quick Q:
i remember something vaguely about something java related to picture in picture functionality of the bluray player not being standardised yet, and being a bit buggy (back in the day when the PS3 was launched). Did they fix or patch it already? i got audio bluray discs here that i would like to hear someday. honestly, the only game atm in the PS3 camp i would really like to play is uncharted drakes fortune. and i cant justify the $$$ yet for another console. but i guess it is a bargain if you compare the PS3 to standalone bluray players.

The browser is pretty cool and having the flash support means you can browse to sites
like youtube and watch the vids on your TV. I did not yet test this but can't you play
flash games also?

Hope this helps :) PS3 is one of the better if not the best blu-ray player out there also it get's updated with new firmware every once and awhile to keep it up to date.
