PS3 Firmware 2.40 Released - Some PS3s Bricked

As some may know, yesterday was the release of Sony PS3s Highly anticipated 2.40 firmware which brought support for in-game XMB as well as Trophies for supported games.

Problems started occurring however when numerous people worldwide started complaining that their PS3's had ended up with a so-called "Black Screen of Death" due to a failed or faulty installation of Firmware 2.40.

Sony has confirmed that there is a bug in the firmware and as a result have removed it from their servers until it has been sorted out. The firmware can still however be downloaded from numerous other websites.

If you have found yourself with a bricked PS3, there is only one fix that exists at the moment:

Unbrick 2.40 Update
The ps3's firmware remains untouched so technically it's not a brick but rather a bug. I have heard that people have seen the download jump from 50% to 100% right away. Between those those percentages are integrity checks and for some reason they were skipped. After the PS3 will boot and attempt to load that update file but it will be unable to as it's not complete.

Fix 1: Replace the Hard Drive so the ps3 will boot the last firmware you were on. (Firmware was never updated) Then the ps3 will ask you to format it so do so.

Fix 2: (You will lose all game saves) If you don't have two hard drives you could always hook the hard drive up to your computer and reformat it. Then put back into your ps3 and the ps3 will ask you to format it.

I feel so sorry for PS3 owners now!

Downloaded the update yesterday- no problems here.
 
PlayStation site security warning

Gamers around the world have been warned that the Sony PlayStation website has been compromised by hackers.

Several pages on the site are hosting malicious code, including pages promoting the games SingStar Pop and God of War, security firm Sophos has warned.

At the time of writing the pages are still infected, with fake messages popping up telling visitors that their PCs are infected with malware.

"If users do not have sufficient protection in place then they might find that before they know it they have been scared into handing their credit card details over to a bunch of cybercriminals," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos.

"It is essential that all websites, especially high-profile ones like this, have been properly hardened to prevent hackers from injecting malicious code onto what should be legitimate web pages," he continued.

Sophos has reported the issue to Sony. In the meantime, surfers are advised to avoid the site.

The hackers have timed the attack to coincide with the release of version 2.4 of the firmware for the PS3, presumably realising that the PlayStation site would see an increase in traffic at this time.

Seems it was more a problem if you updated through your PS3.

If you downloaded the update via a PC and updated your PS3 using a flash drive or something along those lines, you weren't affected.

I updated through my PS3 and no problems here either.

It doesn't seem that the problem is all that widespread - although it must suck if you are one of the unlucky ones.

There wasnt a single reported SA PS3 being bricked!
