PS3 firmware 3.56 goes live

AH. I wish they would focus on important stuff like processing speeds / support / Better interface / Playback...Hell, anything that makes the PS3 better, rather than trying to squash security threats!

Hackers busy cracking the new firmware

George "Geohot" Hotz opened a Pandora's box by making the PS3 root key public, which made life easier for hackers to enable full-fledged homebrew and pirated games by throwing the system encryption open. And so they did with a custom firmware (CFW) v3.55 which allowed just that. Sony reacted predictably by first promising a patch for the CFW and then with the mandatory lawsuit. Three weeks after PS3 was compromised, Sony has released a compulsory update that installs the new firmware v3.56 that kills the homebrew features of the v3.55 firmware. The update seems to be an exclusive security fix, which just might ease the woes of beleaguered Call of Duty: Modern Warfare players.

PSX-Scene says that the v3.56 update packs in a new .SELF with an unknown KEY. The .SELF files are the executables in the PS3 system and this one fixes the compromised keys with a new one. That means all homebrew tools will need to be tweaked to function again. Youness Alaoui aka ***aRoToS is busy cracking the latest firmware and you can watch his tweets for latest updates on the matter. If you're still confused, this update is mandatory if you want to use the PS3 online. However, it won't be long before this update is compromised as well.

Interesting move by Sony.
I think they should just give up trying to patch the security hole.

they are not paying for our data costs so they should reward us in some way or make the patch file size much smaller.

OOOhhh so not paying like xbox live for playing online does not matter. Way to go aholes pretty soon we might have to pay thanks to hakkers

Thats why i'm +1 for hombrew cracks.... so that we have leverage over the overlords.

Yes it will end up being a conduit for piracy but there is so much more value homebrew could offer, so many things that could just as easily be offered by Sony/Microsoft/nintendo.

They refuse to do so... they want us to do things the way they want, on their terms.

If they had just left linux and allowed homebrew apps the current scenario would not have happened. Every thing that you restrict people from doing will eventually be cracked. Why do people jailbreak their iPhones etc?

Exactly... the origional PS3 had Linux support and could play the old PS2 games.... how did they end up going BACKWARDS ?
 
I can still play my Ps2 games? Linux never interested me. However, it is now getting out of hand with the updates. 40meg last night for MW:BO. Now 160meg to play online again. Eish.
