PS3 firmware adds HD audio

If you like watching Blu-ray Discs on your PlayStation 3, then things are about to get better. Sony has announced a firmware update that’ll give film fans the option to use another HD audio format.

Firmware version 2.30 will be released on 15 April and will enable the console to support DTS-HD Master Audio. This enables the HD video seen on screen to be matched with equally high quality sound.

Dolby’s TrueHD, which the PS3 already supports, is more common than DTS-HD. However, Sony’s firmware update will at least give consumers the option to choose which sound set-up they want to use.

DTS itself claims that DTS-HD Master Audio is capable of delivering audio that is "bit-for-bit identical to the studio master" at up to 24.5Mb/s on Blu-ray, with the audio encoded using 24-bit quantisation at 96kHz.

Sony already supports the audio format in several of dedicated Blu-ray players, including the BDP-S350 and BDP-S550 that it announced in February.

Yeah, age is a bast@rd hey, lack of hearing, understanding and return to juvenile gaming tendencies is a excellent indicator that age is taking its toll.

Great news.

However, you would still need an Amplifier to direct the sound to 8 speakers for the TrueHD or DTS HD. Just plugging it into you TV via the HDMI cable isnt gonna cut it. So you gotta get your kit together

(You would have to do this even if you had a stand alone blu-ray player)

The format is already supported by all the major manufacturers (Yamaha, Sony, Pioneer etc) and well understood by home theater system junkies.

This means that I will be lusting after a new receiver. Will have to wait though as the wanted list is deep.

I am happy that the ability has been added. In some circles there was doubt as to whether it could be done so I am glad that is now lined up.

Ideally both HDMI 1.3 and Dolby TrueHD or DTS HD audio. Receivers with the latter almost costing double then with just the former.

Believe it or not but Home Theatre junkies are not quite the mainstream population... which is what I was talking about..

But then again neither are hard core gamers the main stream. Each to his own.

A few years ago only very hard core guys had multichannel sound capable systems, now days they are a dime a dozen. One box solutions have brought it to the masses.
