PS3 Gameplay Record

Hey Guys...

I've been looking around for a capture card or a PVR and have noticed that if you record gameplay you must play through your PC .. Is this true

Also If you can link a cheap preferably HD PVR would be great ...

I don't know much about this so ANY help would be appreciated
