he has 3.61 firmware and he needs the card reader to go back to 3.55.

If hes on 3.61 then hes stuck with that as far as I know...

Allot of the techniques on the net claiming to work will brick his ps3 so tell him to be carefull.

Each his own but downgrading your firmware prevents you from playing online and most likely newer titles will not work.

Nope, they changed the keys from 3.56 on so 3.55 is the last version you can do anything usefull from.

Unless some hacker gets the new keys and releases them theres no downgrade or CFW on anything above 3.55.

Most people have 2 playstations, one for legit online play and one for homebrew etc...
