PS3 Multiplayer - LAN?

Hi,

It seems like there are only a few games that support LAN gaming for the PS3.

I was just wondering if you play online, do you have to play with anyone and everyone, or is there a way to host a game that only you and say two friends can play? I'm keen to play online, but in some cases I'l like it if only have myself and a few friends could be playing a car racing game or something.

I know with cod you can host a game to be only your friends, not sure about other games

Cool, thanks - I read a few game reviews, and it is pretty game specific. It seems that most of the multiplayer games allow you to invite specific people, or allow anyone So in general you can have "closed" games, which will be cool.
