hi people! i finally picked up my 250gb today! awesome quality on games and blu-ray! i hope you guys can answer some questions i have:

1. i have put video files on a usb stick but it doesnt pick it up - only mp3's. do i need to enable divx? it has divx on the box i just assumed it ould work. my media centre dreams are not coming through.
2. i have used mkv2vob to convert to fat32 4gb files but as yet the ps3 does not recognise the files. i leave the default settings except for fat32. do i need to specify the vob format as output? if i select anything other than 'automatic' i get a warning message.
3. my firmware is v3.15. is an update essential? i dont have adsl so that will be a struggle to do as its a 166mb download.

i had to physically force my mouth close when i saw the graphics for the first time! brilliant is all i can say. i now understand why u guys rave about the ps3!

dankie.

1.triangle display all when looking for something off a flash disk.
2. ummmmmm no idea
3. Not if you not going to be using any online games or anything. If update is crucial you could always ask a mate to put it on a flash disk and usually as new releases come out they are put on the disks of the new games.

thanx. will try the triangle button. my only concern is that i see nothing. i'm waiting for telkom to play nicely before i get that line installed.

Pleasure. 250 posts up. BOOM!
You might have to wait a while in that case. Let me know how streaming media goes. I'm thinking of doing it through wifi from VLC but I'm not hundreds how to set it up. Also I heard its no good for HD and its mainly what I download now.

congratulations! try mkv2vob, works well. no streaming for me, refuse to upgrade my PC. don't believe the hype!

How exactly does it work? I am on a mac but do have an ancient PC here if I need to do something. Is it software you install on the playstation or do you do it on a PC then drag the new file onto your hard drive?

Hi Guys, if you wanna stream from your PC (MKV, AVI etc) - goto ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com

download the media server and install on your PC - your PS3 and PC need to be on the same network (cable or wireless). The PS3 Media server will search for your PS3 once you open the App.

I've been streaming HD over my Wireless with this app...keep in mind you need to set the transcoder to keyint=25:vqmax=5:vqmin=2 - 720p streams like a dream - you would maybe have to go one setting down to stream 1080p. I've been streaming from a HP 6710b without problems.

Avi is directly sent to the PS3 ie no transcoding, but if you have the "corrupt data" error on the PS3 just set the transcoder to force AVI transcoding.

Works like a bomb!!

I am converting with mkv2vob to fat32 segments then I copy to external fat32 drive and plug into ps3 and watch! Quality is brilliant! Please note that ps3 only displays fat32 drives. U will need to download a program to format drives >32gb to fat32! Bit of a schlep to setup but worthit!

Thanks for the info guys. I havnt played around too much with streaming but the times i have tried it i found the colours and quality of the video wernt as good as on the laptop itself. Was wondering if its just a setting in ps3 media server or something else?

After 4 years of xbox 360...I thought..what the hell...so I got the PS3!

Played the FIFA 2010 game, the Xbox version has better graphics, believe me I have both!

I was quite annoyed by the amount of downloading I had to do in the past 3 days...upgraded from version 3.1 to 3.3 to 3.4 in 2 days...had to download a 49MB file for Playstation Home and another 39MB file to update FIFA 2010 squads and stuff.

Tried out online gaming for the 1st time using vodacom 3G, wasn't too bad.

Good console.

Also went to Sandton City to checkout the whole 3D gaming thing, quite fascinating!

im currently on the software version supplied..v3.30..i will not be upgrading unless i get the stuff on a flashdrive! everything works so i will not upgrade. i will not be going online anytime soon so its fine.
