I'm STILL considering getting a PS3 and considering spending R2500 to get a used machine.
Is it advisable to do so in terms of guarantee and hardware failures considering it is used?
From what I've read, PS2's are still in production and selling well so SONY dropped the backward functionality on the 60G so as not to interfere with PS2 sales. BUT, a friend of mind said that the 60G had lots of reliabity or hardware failure issues, any truth in that?

Since I still do have my PS2 games, should I get a used 60G PS3?

I wouldn't recommend a 60GB. Those were the first models that came out and the realibilty is not there anymore plus you will not have any warranty on it so if it does fail you have nothing. I have a 60 GB and it is awesome but everyday i have to pray that it just doesn't fail again like my first one. I saw IC had the 80GB models for R1999 so just shop around.

Personally I would never buy any used console. You have no idea where it has been taken, how many times it's been moved around and especially bumped or dropped.
Any hardware fix on the PS3 will set you back in the 4 figure range. So rather save for a new one and have a little peace of mind.
A friend of mine has a 40gig PS3 going three years old and it hasn't given him a single problem. I'm really impressed by the build quality.

Maybe wait a while and save more. There are talks of bringing PS2 compatibilty back to the PS3. At the end of the day a brand new 250gig PS3 with better power efficiency and PS2 compatibilty for +- R4200
is much more worth it than a old used one for just a R1000-R1500 less.

Ye dude! Rather save up some more and buy a new one. You won't be sorry!

Do you currently own a PS2? If not, get 2nd hand one and use that in the mean time. They go for about R800 so if anything happens, it won't be such a big loss.

I saw last night, Toys 'R Us in Canal walk is selling an 80GB console with Ghostbusters for R2799.00
Thats a good deal if you in Cape Town, can always sell the game if you don't like it

I must disagree, I own a PS3 from the first batch that came in ( When the only ones you could find that weren't sold out were on cellphone contracts ), and it's still working 100%

Sony even shipped my my James Bond Blu-Ray disk within two weeks with it.

Everything works fine, it just needs to be taken care of, still using my original remote even, and it's battery hasn't degraded by more than 5% at best,

If you can find one that's been taken care of, go for it.

Iv'e had my 60 gig for nearly or slightly over 4 years now. It has been a dream. Look after it and now problems. Paid R6k for it then, but i must say, the new ps3 is really smart and runs a lot cooler. Also still use my original controllers without problems, would like the new Dualshock 3, but for R800 each, i'll pass.

CNA is selling the DS3 with BD remote for R800.

I bought a PS3 Slim from Woolworth yesterday 120Gig Slim for R3699.00 so if you have a woolworth card this is not a bad deal and you get a R100 voucher to spend as you like.

Dude, which IC had it for R1999?
That really would be incredible

Yeah, IC had a clearance sale with the old fat 80 gig models at R1999. I managed to grab my PS3 about a month back at ToysRUs for R2499 with Ghostbusters. Just keep an ear to the ground and watch out for a "new" 80 gig on special.
