Hi guys. I hope I'm posting this in the correct part of the forum.

I have a PS3 Slim. Last Sunday, I turned it on after a few weeks of not using it. I always leave it on standby. Anyway, I fired up GT5 and was happily playing along when suddenly, about 20 minutes in, the console switched off. When I say switched off, I mean absolutely no power was going to it at all. I removed the power cable, waited about 30 seconds and plugged it back in again and this time it fired up for about 10 seconds and did exactly the same thing. There are no lights when it turns off by itself. I have to unplug the power lead, wait a while and then plug back in to get the red standby light.

It's 7 years old already, so the warranty is long gone and I decided to look up the problem online and open it up. Turns out there are loads of people that have had this problem, but there isn't a singular fix. Here's what I've tried so far, based on some YouTube videos I've seen on the subject :

- Ran self cleaning by holding the "eject" button down upon startup. No change.
- Vacuum'd out any dust. No change.
- Removed the PSU to try and adjust the potentiometers. Turns out my model doesn't have the potentiometers.
- Used a can of compressed air to blow out any dust from the vents and under the board. No change.

I haven't tried another power supply, in case anyone wants to know. That's my next step. There are some people suggesting scraping off the thermal paste from the processor and GPU and applying a new layer to each, but I'm not too comfortable doing that myself.

I know my limits, so I'll probably send it in for a further look, but just out of interest, has anyone had this problem with their PS3 slim ?

That sounds like YLOD.THe problem is the thermal pastes looses its effectiveness over the years and its unable to cool the GPU.

Dont do this yourself, trust me I know!Get a pro to do it.

I've opened up plenty of PS'3 - def not something you want to do yourself if you are not familiar with them.

The first step would be to redo the thermal paste - I'm sure this would fix the problem.

I've redone the thermal paste earlier. Followed a Youtube video and while very painstaking, it turns out it wasn't too bad. Problem persists though. Stayed on for about 40 minutes and managed to play a bit of GT5 before it switched off. What else could it be ? Just wondering if it's worth sending in or whether to just grab the super slim when I have the extra moolah. They're not too badly priced these days.
