Hey Guys,

I have been looking at buying a PS3 but dont have a fancy HD tv, and dont think I can afford one too soon. Is it still worth getting a PS3? Can I connect it to my normal tv if it has RCA jacks?

It won't be HD but it'll work yes.

My 360 looks fine on my normal tv in my room and awesome on my 32" LCD in the TV room.

So I'd say buy the console so long, save up, and get yourself a 32 inch/80 cm LCD HDTV plus a HDMI cable, and you good to go. The reason I recommend 80cm, is that its decently priced and you have HD eye candy to spoil yourself with.

I see retailers like CNA are selling Blue-Ray DVDs for R200. Pick-up one or 2 to watch some high definition goodness once you've upgraded your tv. ;)

The PS3 comes with a standard RCA SDTV cable so it'll work just fine.

Frankly though I'd say reconsider. I don't want to start yet another PS3 vs 360 flamewar, but the only "advantage" the PS3 has over the 360 is Blu-Ray movies which you're paying for and on an SDTV are a useless feature.

Personally (I'm on record as a 360 fan, and anti BluRay, so take this as you will) In your situation I would think that, unless there are some games that your life depends on on the PS3 the 360 is going to be better value. 3rd party content between the 360 and PS3 is mostly the same, so look at the consoles exclusives and see which appeals to you more, and chose based on your own taste. As, originally a PC gamer, I find the 360 content appeals to me more.

Just thinking of the 3rd party stuff off the top of my head, you're talking, CoD4, GTA4, Guitar Hero, GRiD, Battlefield, Brutal Legend, Endwar, all the sports titles etc etc. To get a PS3 to play those you're paying almost double for the same experience on the 360.

If you play online there's also the communities and Live vs PSN to consider.

But a I began, ultimately it's your money and your needs that need to met, just look at the important stuff not the fluff.

@doobiwan

You right, 360 is better value but it seems Darthmoose has made up his mind about what console he's buying. I have two Xbox 360s, so whose the fanboi :P

I merely stated that since he is going the PS3 route, that he needs to save up to get on the HD bandwagon.

But you right, it isn't a flame-war :D

From an owner of both consoles, I like my PS3 a bit more but like doobiwan mentioned, look at what you want. I like my PS3 cos I'm somewhat a fan of JRPG titles and they're released mostly on the PS3 not to mention MGS/FF titles. 360 has Gears so far and for me Lost Odyssey.

Anyways, if you want HD quality without having to sell your organs, you can connect it to your LCD/CRT screen using a HDMI to DVI cable or a VGA cable.

I'm using a HDMI to DVI on my 22" LCD and it runs beautifully!

Yep, get a 360, its drive sounds like a blow dryer, it scratches discs, and yep, 17 percent of all 360's die. :(

I used to have a 360 dude, the thing went bye bye, STILL have my ps2 and its STILL going strong! (and quiet). nuff said.

Im buying the big ol black monolith from Sony. People who bitch about it usually cant afford it, or already bought a 360.

Listen, from a gamers perspective, ive got a very good feeling about the ps3 in 2008/2009, i knew it was going to start getting legs after GT and GTA IV released, and now with Metal Gear you can definitely feel a more positive stance towards it in the hardcore gamer scene.

Its a matter of opinion though, some folks would die by their 360's, others would get a wii, some stick to their Mega Drives, whatever floats ur boat.

My main gripe with the 360 was the loud noise, maybe it doesnt bother some but for me it was enough to force me to stop playing most of the time.

All of which is no longer an issue with latest batch of 360's which have the newer CPU/GPU configs and quieter/less volatile DVD-ROMs.

So you're judging the merits of each current-gen console based on a brand name? That would make you a fanboy I'm afraid. The PS2 was FAR more simplistic than the current consoles...hence there was less to go wrong in the first place. I have a NES that is still in working condition yet I have no need to go out and buy a Wii

No, people who "bitch" about it usually require a gaming console and not a glorified Bluray player that costs an arm and a leg...and which happens to play games as an added bonus.

Stop the presses. Someone has a "good feeling" about a console, thus no evidence to prove why they think it will succeed is necessary

Turn the volume up or perhaps stop resting your head on the console while you play. I'm sorry, but I own both a launch 360 and a newer one...neither of which make anywhere near enough noise to cause me to stop playing.

I have to agree with this : As much as I do love my 360, I so wish it was quieter :(

@Maestro

... Is it still worth getting a PS3? ...

Not totally set I figure ;)

I'm waiting for my kids to grow up a bit then I can push for the 2nd telly and 360 as well ;)

Yes, the 360 gets a bit noisy, but an interesting interview with, I think it was Aaron Greenberg - That's because it's running at full transfer rate, ie, why the 360 can run all it's games off disc and the PS3 has to do installs.

As for them dying, get over it already, that was last years problem, all the new 360's are solid, get yours swapped and stop complaining. We also have to ask, how's that PS3 YLOD laser failure issue coming along?

Noise, RRoD etc etc, are really minor issues, as is price, the console prices reflect fair value for what each offers. There are two real deciding factors when considering a console:

1. Enjoyment - The console has to have the games you want to play and they have to be fun to play, ie the controller suits you. Minor graphical differences are really irrelevant.
2. Friends & Community - If you play online you want to be on the platform your friends are on, simple. If you have no friends, then you'll find plenty of new ones, on either, but more so on the 360, the online community is just larger and the whole experience is geared more towards online.

Both consoles are going to have a good '08, besides enough XP 3rd party titles to keep anyone busy the PS3 gets MGS4, Resistance 2 and LBP. The 360 gets Gears 2, Fable 2, Too Human, Banjo Kazooie and VP:TIP. PS3 gets Home, Xbox 360 gets community games. It's really up to personal gaming tastes, choosing based on hardware issues is doing yourself a disservice.

a YLOD laser failre?

Thats almost DOLBY in reverse

Darth, depends totally on what you want. Both have good games, so it depends on what exclusives you enjoy. I own both, but prefer my PS3 because of it's exclusives, and i dont subscribe to LIVE. Dont listen to naysayers saying PSN is horrible online - i play online as much as i can, without hassles, and with the peeps on my friends list. It works, and it's free. As a multimedia device it's leaps ahead of the 360 imo, but that's just a "nice to have", same as blu-ray. So depending on what you need and your budget, i'm sure you wont be dissapointed with either console.
