RLOD or YLOD - Red/yellow light of death.
Original 60GB version, over 6k and 3 years later.
I can assume that it was my fault for not allowing better ventilation.
So some research shows that its the Motherboard or HDD.
Took out HDD - into an enclosure into Win 7 - nothing (Fat 32 60GB, dont think Windows recognizes it).
Check Disk management, and can see Unallocated 60GB.
Is this enough to say the HDD works.
Took a 160GB Toshiba HDD (enclosure is Toshiba - think hdd is a Seagate). HDD has some Toshiba software that allows the fat32 structure to be recognized by PS3 and Windows.
Insert as is into PS3 - still RLOD.
Question is, is this enough to say that the HDD is not the problem.
IF not HDD, then what :( Motherboard.
Any help, recommendations.
Any idea what Sony will charge?

Speak to maestro_za before Sony. It's way out of warranty so you might as well get it fixed by someone cheaper.

Did some googling, this seemed to be problem with 60 gig PS3 overheating and hard drive or power supply.
what happens when you boot the ps3 up ? red screen ? or just blinking lights ?

You can also try to boot Ps3 into safemode and do a restore

Will try a different power supply when i go home.
Seems to be a notherboard issue...
When i start Ps3, the light changes from green to flashing yellow then to flashing red.
Nothing on the screen.
Will try and look at a system restore.

The PS3 won't get into the safemode when it has YLOD.
I did the reflow on my one, its working again, except that my fan doesn't increase its speed as the temp increases.

Using external fans at the moment to keep it running properly.

Thats unlucky superskully. I got a 60GB and it will be 4 years old early next year. I don't know how much longer it is going to last me but its had a good innings so far with not a single days trouble.

Maestro is the best person to speak to. :)

My one just passed the 3 year mark with no problems.
I started it up last week and it died, no signs of anything wrong from the previous nights playing.

At least i know it can last long enough for the data transfer, if i buy the slim

Same thing happened to my 60gig last nov. Bought it on launch day, had a blu ray dive failure 6 months later, got it fixed though within a week, then it got the YLOD in nov last year. I think the problem was that i rather stupidly:wtf: had it placed with the fan facing the wall and all the hot air just blew back in. It was past warrenty so i decided to just use some ebucks and bought the uncharted 2 slim bundle, havent had a problem since.:D

At least its not as bad as my xbox, already been through 4 since launch. Although only 3 broke, one was stolen.

I agree with the heat issue.
And i knew it was getting too hot. Also have the HD PVR next to it, and that worse as when i touch it burns.

my 40gb i bought in dubai 3 years ago now has ylod :/ anywhere in durban i can get this fixed? i was quoted R600.. is that a decent price?
