If i buy a PS3 in South Africa, will i be able to play PS3 games bought in the USA?

Yes. A PS3 machine will play any PS3 game no matter where you bought it i.e. they are completely region free.

BR movies are not region free though, and will only play on machines for that region. With games, you will have no problem. Also note, that backwards compatible PS1 and 2 games are region blocked on the PS3

But yep, another big plus for the PS3 is that it's games are completely region free, so no PAL vs NTSC issues at all. Sony stated this as an explicit policy from the get go.

aha, thank you... not planning on watching any BR movies... going to study, no cash for HD tv

Just beware there have been rumors etc that some games will use the servers that the game originates from. I dont know how true this is, but worth looking into.
But its fantastic being able to buy games from anywhere! Amazon.com is often more cheaper than amazon.co.uk so i myself am looking at getting usa ps3 games :D

im not going to be playing online... not with a PS3 at least

Problem with that is shipping from the US is prohibitive, so the UK can actually work out cheaper. Better yet, bring them in through Play Asia.

PS3 from the US

Will BR movies bought here in SA not work on a PS3 from the US

No, but a lot of the movies are able to play in multiple regions. Check the back of the movie, it normally says Region A, B & C or sometimes just Region A, etc.

Regions for Blu-ray standard
A: East Asia (except Mainland China and Mongolia), Southeast Asia, North America, South America and their dependencies.

B: Africa, Southwest Asia, Europe (except Russia and Kazakhstan), Oceania and their dependencies.

C: Central Asia, East Asia (Mainland China and Mongolia only), South Asia, Europe (Russia and Kazakhstan only) and their dependencies.

So PS3 from US is Region A,
PS3 from SA is Region B

Another note:
A lot of the blu ray movies in Musica are multiple regions, but the bright sparks from Ster-Kinekor put most of their stickers over the region part, so it's sometimes difficult to see which regions the movie support.

Thanks

Thanks for that, its just that really want one, and there is a massive price difference. 400$ for 80 gig from the states where R 5200 for 40gig here.

Don't let the HDD size fool you. Get the cheapest one you can, even if it had a 5Gb HDD
(ok, not possible :) but the point is, you can swap that HDD out without any trouble. Its
even explained in the manual how to do it. So you can dump a 320Gb 2.5" HDD in there if
you like.

Try to get a PS3 in SA if you can. You might not think online is important now but wait till
you got the unit and want to play with some friends and can't because your connecting to
US servers and not Euro. A lot of online stuff is on the way for the PS3 like Home and
some MMORPGs.

Yes, you can. PSN is locally supported and in local currency, and Wipeout HD rocks. :D
