Ive been trying to find a solution to my PS3 slow internet speed problem without any help.

So here goes.

PS3 has latest updates, as does my router (Netgear DGN 632) (soon new netgear DGN2000).

I have a 4 meg line which runs at about 3.1 megs (speedtest.net) on my pc. but here lies the problem.
as soon as i connect the ethernet cable to the back of my PS3 and try play fifa10 online, do speed tests on the net,
do the connection test on PS3 console then the line speed if lucky gets 400k.

I set up the wired connection automatically so have not changed anything. Trying to play fifa10 online is a joke, whereas any
games on the pc even overseas is a breeze.

How do i set the PS3 and router up so that the PS3 uses all the available bandwidth i have? do i need to port forward and how do i do that? or is there a firewall blocking the internet connection on the ps3?

Regards

Hmm... I noticed a similar issue with my PS3 so would also love to hear a solution. I only have a 384 line and connected to my router over wireless, but still when I do the speedtest, it is horribly slow, and sometimes even time out.

Yeah I have noticed this too...

I never seem to get the same u/l and d/l rate as on my PC or Xbox.
This weekend my friend was over with his new slim PS3 and we both had to
do a Uncharted2 update. His machine seemed to d/l much quicker than
mines.

Setting up a DMZ helps improve speeds it helped with mine here is the process:

) Log into your netgear router with your user name and password.

2) Once in scroll down to the option LAN IP SET-UP

3) At the bottom there's a section called Address Reservation select that.

4) Click on ADD and it will bring up all the connected hardware via it's IP and MAC address go into NETWORK SETTINGS on your PS3's XBM and select Connection Status.

5) Locate the IP address and it should be in the list shown in your routers attached hardware select that box in your routers set-up page and then provide a name "PS3" for example.

5) Once done click add and it will of take you back to the previous page and will now have the PS3 in the list and a reservation of that address this means that MAC address will always get that IP address no matter if any other PC connects before it via wireless.

6) Now select the option WAN Setup

7) Enable the feature DMZ and enter your PS3's last 2 digits in the box and click apply.

You've now successfully enabled your PS3 to pass through a DMZ server which basically means your PS3 is not being filtered through the hardware firewall. Your PC(s) and Laptops(s) are still secure with the encryption you have set-up.

thanks a lot Reddevil10.

My connection speed is much better. it jumped up to 1.8 meg which is a big improvement!

Fifa 10 online ranked match play is still crap though. game is still very delayed due to lag.

Hopefully it will get sorted out with fifa11 :D

No prob,i get the same problems with fifa10,FPS games run like a dream though.

Hi Reddevil10, thanks for these tips, I'll give it a go when I am home.

Just one thing that makes me curious about this - does it mean that the PS3 servers need to ping back directly to your machine to enable full speed for some reason? That is after all why you place the PS3 in your DMZ so that the machine is visible to the outside internet..? Normally that would be somewhat unsafe, depending on what you put in the DMZ (like an unpatched Windows machine could be hacked there) so I hope there aren't any security issues for PS3s this way.
Otherwise, if it works and is safe then it's all good! :)

I set my PS3 up to make its own PPPoE connection, bridging over the router. Solved the speed problem, although game updates are ridiculously slow still. Normal PSN downloads are full tilt.
