PS3 updates a nightmare

Hi there

Firstly i'm not all that clued up on consoles (or pc's)....

OK, so my question is, would somebody be willing to help me set up my PS3 to get PS3 and gran tourismo 5 updates?

So far i have managed to get it connected to the interwebs (i browsed), but it wont download and run the updates.

And why does my ps3 always ask me to update the game while I am in a game. Even if I say no, I get a popup after a minute again, can't they have an option to update after I finish my game?
 
When you log into the PS3 there is an icon for settings under this icon you will find system update, when you click on it the system will look for an update about 165Mb.
You can also put the update on a memory stick in a folder called PS3 and in the folder create a folder called UPDATE, copy the system update in UPDATE for the system to recognize the ps3 format update.
As for the game when you log into the PSN network and the game starts to load it will tell you there is a patch for it and download it.

in order for you to play online against other player you must update it, if you are playing single player you don't have to update.
But when you are logged into PSN it will always ask to update the game if there is a patch available.

Yes, I can understand that. But when I am in the middle of a single player game it interrupts my game every few minutes. Atleast let me finish the track first. I mean, it cost me my fastest lap time and I haven't been able to recreate that form - I mean, I could have been the world champion by now.

LOL i think there is a setting you can select that takes off check for automatic updates.

I will check on my ps3 tonight where the settings are.

I prefer this method. I've got a slow line, updating took forever and was concerned about possible power failure during update process.
Is PS3 really rendered "useless" if the power fails during an update?

You should only worry when it is installing the patch, when downloading and the power cuts you just have to download again.
But during patch install ouch, you have couple of options when this happens and PS3 is broken, start up in safe mode and take it from there.
i think you can restore to default settings when in safe mode.

How long did ur update take roughly?
The gt5 update is about 600mb, and i have a 384kb line...

Again, thanx very much everybody, will try update again this evening.
 
also had a 384 line got the wooosh now so i dont know how long it would take but on my 384 line 165Mb took about 45min to hour. it looks like and 1hour and half to 2 hours. Pity you cant download at work

LOL! I nearly fell off my chair when my friend's PS3 did this last night. He was about to get silver in one of the License Races when the blasted window came up and he accidentally restarted the console.
 
If u not racing online, sign out of PSN.
I'm busy downloading the new update on my pc but not sure how to update using the USB. Will try to figure it out once the download is complete.
