Sony Announces PlayStation VR 2 Specs Including Eye-tracking, HDR, & 110° Field-of-view

Today during Sony’s CES 2022 press conference the company revealed the first details on PlayStation VR 2, including eye-tracking, a “4K” HDR display, and a 110° Field-of-view.

For the first time today, Sony confirmed that its next-gen VR headset for PS5 will be called… *drumroll*… PlayStation VR 2. Although it’s not really much of a surprise, it’s the first time the company has officially revealed the headset’s name.

During the company’s CES 2022 press conference today Sony also confirmed a range of features and specs for PSVR 2. Here’s what we know so far:

PlayStation VR 2 Specs

Sony said that the headset will include foveated rendering. This is a rendering technique which uses eye-tracking to render high detail only at the center of the user’s field-of-view (where the eye sees most of its detail), while reducing detail in the periphery. This allows for more detailed virtual scenes without giving up much performance.

Does it work with glasses?

Does it induce nausea as the first one did?

Hey Gamers

Is it possible to set up an external HDD for PS4 games on PC/Mac and not on the PS5 itself?

I would like to use my 1TB external partitioned into 2 drives

New Patent From Mark Cerny Suggests PlayStation Has Solved Their Backwards Compatibility Issues

PlayStation continues to enjoy the momentum that started right when the PS4 launched compared to its competition, though it still falls behind in one major area. Backwards compatibility.

While players on Xbox are able to explore titles on their current gen console from the original Xbox, those on PlayStation don’t have the same access, and PlayStation Now has always been a poor attempt to fill that gap.
Mark Cerny however seems to have potentially solved the problem – at least that’s what his new patent looks like. It’s titled “Backward Compatibility Through Use Of Spoof Clock and Fine Grain Frequency Control”.

While a proper technological understanding of the patent’s description does admittedly evade me, there are specific claims that at least sound to be quite telling.

In particular, claim 11 already begins to suggest that this is a solution to getting games from all generations running on PS5 and PS4.

“11. The method of claim 1, wherein the different version of the system is a less powerful system than the current version of the system.”

Since Sony decided they didn’t want to dedicate hardware space within the console chassis, a solution would need to come from software.

That has seemingly been a years-long technological challenge to overcome for Sony, though it could also have just been their focuses shifting recently towards backwards compatibility.

In any case, this is a very exciting patent, especially considering the rumoured Project Spartacus subscription service that will overtake all other current forms of services offered from Sony.

The supposed three-tiered system is said to grant access to a library of PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games. Hopefully this new method of achieving backwards compatibility allows for players to play their old games natively, without streaming.

Sony ‘pulling PS Now retail cards’ ahead of expected launch of Game Pass rival

Sony has reportedly instructed UK retailers to pull PlayStation Now cards from sale.

The decision to discontinue PlayStation Now retail cards (via VentureBeat) follows a report that Sony plans to merge its game streaming service into fellow subscription offering PlayStation Plus.

It’s claimed that UK retailers will have to pull PS Now cards from store shelves by January 21.

According to documents seen by Bloomberg, the new service is codenamed ‘Spartacus’ and will combine the current PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now services, phasing out the branding of the latter. It’s expected to launch for PS4 and PS5 this spring and to be structured across three payment tiers.

The first tier will reportedly include existing PlayStation Plus benefits, such as online play and free monthly titles. The second will offer a large catalogue of games like Xbox Game Pass (although not first-party titles at launch). The third tier will add extended demos, game streaming and a library of classic PlayStation games.

PS5 rest mode bug

Still have the problem where my system sometimes go into a reboot loop after rest mode, even did a full reset and manual update this weekend, no joy. Not the only one as per Reddit. Guess I have to contact Sony for a replacement/repairs.

Wonder how long that is gonna take with current shortages and all :(

Honest question - why/how do you use rest mode? I've never had an issue with mine personally, but I also don't really see the benefit of using it (except for charging my controller)

Work colleague had the same thing, took about a week at most to have the issue sorted and get the console back. Not sure if it was a new one though.

Edit - His console was bricked.

I dont "use" it, problem is it automatically goes into rest mode if you downloading/installing a game and leaving it on to complete.

I can fix the reboot loop by powering it down on the console and leaving it for 2 mins and then turning it on by the console again. What warries me is the fact that some people having this problem had consoles bricked. I don't want that to happen to me so rather get it sorted now.

From what I have picked it its only when some games are active. IE: if I close the game or stream Netflix and then go into rest mode its fine.

Edit: Besides its something that should work regardless if I use it or the system does. I mean if I leave my PS3/Xbox on and come back it just works I don't ever have to shut them down, they auto rest and power on all by em self.

Ah I see, I thought it was related to coming out of rest mode only.

Does sound like something that would warrant a replacement though, I think partserve will always have at least some supply for replacements...but maybe check with them
