PS5

Set it up this morning. Coming from the OG PS5 disc version here are some first impressions:

  • I'm surprised at how much smaller it is that the OG phatty
  • Build quality feels the same as the normal PS5, if you're used to that then this is no different, for better or worse
  • Noise wise, fan seems a bit louder than my old PS5 but not enough that it bothers me, I sit around 2.5m away from the TV unit and can't really hear it from there over the game/TV sound. If I get close enough to the console I can hear something that I suspect is coil whine as well but honestly, it's not bothering me
  • If you have your games on an external M2 SSD, you can just put the SSD into the new console, everything will work granted you use the same PSN account
  • Transferring over from the old PS5 is painless, but I do suggest copying the big stuff over to an external SSD or even re-downloading that if you have uncapped and decent internet. I'm transferring my media over using the network and it takes a decent amount of time...currently it's around 3h estimated for ±90GB. Only my old PS5 is on LAN, it would probably have helped to have both on LAN. During setup you can use the new PS5 after it does the first step of transfer, ie all your settings and user data, which took around 12 mins
  • Haven't had a lot of time testing out games yet, but did try BG3...the performance mode now runs 4k upscaled at 60FPS using PSSR and it looks and feels really nice (like quality mode on the base PS5 but at 60FPS :D ) I'm pretty sure the loading has improved as well but can't confirm...Still can't play FF7 Rebirth, which seems like one of the most substantial upgrades, since you can't buy a disc drive in most of Europe unless you resort to scalpers, and F that. Will test more later

Okay tip here for anyone who's gonna do this via network...make sure both are on LAN, my wireless network is very basic so it was getting clobbered by whatever these two devices were doing...now I've put both on LAN and it's around 10m for a transfer of ±50GB...much better

The WiFi on PS5 is schit in general. I had endless issues even though it's literally next to the router, and eventually just put it on the LAN...

Never had an issue myself, just made sure to force it to 5ghz and I have not even had as much as a lag spike in hundreds of hours of online play :)
 
On a different note, just picked up RE4 Gold Edition as well as HZD remastered, both pro enhanced

Same, but my router is less than a meter away from my PS5. My Xbox on the other hand is bad download speeds no matter what. I ordered my Pro from Koodoo so only getting it mid December, but there's plenty do do atm anyway. Luckily there Koodoo had a deal that includes the disc drive because a lot of my games are on disc.

I have yet to plug a LAN cable into mine.

Running with el cheapo ASUS RT-AX55 and have not had a single issue, ever.

Put some hours into HZD Remastered over the weekend, goodness the game looks incredible, I'm playing on "performance pro" mode. I'm reading that Forbidden West looks even better which I can't wait for if true...

What's incredible is it looked almost as good on PS4 already...

Until you played Forbidden West and then HZD looked like a PS3 game :laugh:

I remember getting my PS4 Pro bundle with HZD and being blown away how amazing it looked. Replaying it now and you notice it had quite a lot of jank especially around the character models. The remaster improves this a lot but it's still not on par with Forbidden West imo, where they very clearly put a lot of effort into those characters.
