If anyone wants a static address so you can access your files/pc from work etc or host small websites/ftp and so on.. it is possible and quite easy.

Go to www.dyndns.org and click on "Dynamic DNS" then register and choose a host name. Remember to "add host" and choose a custom name.
Something like joesoap would be joesoap.gotdns.com - This way (after some setting up) you can always access your pc from elsewhere and will always have a redirected dns address.

After registration, the next thing is to get an update client. Look for "Clients" on the left side menu under "Dynamic DNS". Get the first one (dynsite.zip) - it works well. Heres the link: http://noeld.com/dl.asp?path=dynsite.zip&
Its quite easy to set up.

The nice thing is its all free and quite fast. If your IP changes it will register in under 5 minutes and a max of 1 hour.

I have used this (as many others have) quite effectively [:D] even though its not a REAL static IP - but its a good halfway [8D]

Thx, greedyfly, was easy to set up and is working well.

I use Apache webserver for developing/testing websites (locally, before uploading them to my actual websites). A handy 'bundle' I've found is xampp: http://sourceforge.net/projects/xampp/, this contains Apache, MySQL, PHP, Perl, phpMyAdmin and an FTP server, and easy to install. This + dynamic DNS could be used to host a small webserver off your own machine. According to the Sentech FAQ this is allowed, but in moderation, i.e. no very busy websites allowed, which is probably reasonable.

There are other Apache/PHP/MySQL bundles, but I've found that most of them are no longer being kept up to date.

Dynamic DNS can be useful if you e.g. want to access your home machine from work, or while travelling. You could even use some OpenSource remote desktop software like VNC. That's not really secure though by default, but you could run it over e.g. a VPN for security.

Im actually temporarily using the 602 something something [see http://www.myadsl.co.za/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2063] LAN routing app. Its free and it sets up an automatic webserver and its dead easy to redirect it to your homepage folder on your pc (seriously, its for dummies [:p] )

This kind of application is for hosting your personal photos (maybe) or for a portfolio page. No more than a few concurrent visitors at one time maximum. More than that will need hosting (which is cheap anyway).

Also, you can set up mail servers as well. This means you can make email addresses quite easily for example [email protected] and you can make many addresses if you want. Its also quite easy to setup.

Mostly I will use dyn dns for accessing my PC remotely or sharing small files (ie. work/academic) with my friends. 8k is more than a modem and most people use modems anyway so its perfectly fine and with an ftp server there is no need to set up or share kazaa/IRC/bittorrent etc. Bandwidth can also be controlled anyways.

I think the free dynamic dns is nifty. The name is not attractive but its just a common reference anyway so it works fine for basic purposes..

Lastly, if you know of a small/free/low resource/easy to use application with WWW server + FTP server + SMTP/POP3 server all in one let me know. [8D]

Thanks...this is great...I have already set up a FTP server using "Dynamic DNS" and "Cerberus FTP Server" and working well. Unlimited users.

Now I want to host my personal photos for friends and then an email server. I prefer stand alone packages..easier to manage...so if you know of any good software that I can use for these applications, I would appreciate it.

Sounds like a great application.

I wonder how they are making their money though ?

Surely not from Dynamic DNS hosting ?

The update client you speak of, I hope it does not carry spyware ?

No fear, Spybot S&D to the rescue.

No, they *hope* you upgrade and buy your domain name from them. They also have a range of services. check it out at www.dyndns.org

There are stacks of clients and the clients are not part of dyndns so there will be no spyware whatsoever. It really is a fairytale application [;)]

hosting a homeserver

Ditch, u mentioned something about using dyndns+xampp to start ur own server.
now im using an exactly same thing to make a small own server.

i've registered under dyndns and got my own domain name and also downloaded the updater software from there.

n of course i've had my xampp running normally as local host but the thing here is that i just couldn't get it work. Meaning i could not access the webpage or the httpdoc directory other than my own computer when i tried going to my domain using IE.

is there any other settings or configuration i should make??
ditch or whoever had tried this, could somebody enlighten me over this?
thanks
