If I run a scan I can pick up my wireless network but trying to connect I get an error report that I cannot connect to the access point. I have done a default reset and followed instructions online but still it gives the same report, what could be the issue then?

Check the security setting you're broadcasting, psp doesn't work with wpa2.
aah ha, it tells me to check security settings and I am damn sure I tried every combination trying to connect but will check again.

Ok, still no connection to my wi fi but will keep trying.
The battery seems swollen and is spongy, is this normal or a problem? The battery also does not fit snug and is loose so I have it connected via a cable. Should I buy another battery??

From your description I don't think you need to ask about the battery, that thing is dead. It shouldn't affect your wifi but it does need replacing.
