PSP vs Nintendo DS Lite

Think you should try out both to see which one you like. I own a DS, and I haven't laid hands on a PSP yet, except playing LocoRoco for two seconds in CNA once. I would really like to get myself a PSP too, but I am a bit worried about that custom firmware update stuff. Probably ungrounded worries though as I haven't a clue what it entails. :o With the DS, running homebrew is easy, you just get a flashcart for 500 bucks and you are set. It does amounts to more expenses, especially if you are going for a RAM upgrade as well. Why is homebrew better on PSP? Is there better apps, or is it easier to get going? Please elaborate on that one, PSP fans. One can probably found the answers in Super PSP thread if you can battle through all the anti-DS propaganda. :D

Oh yes, and the DS has a touch screen. And a non-touch screen. This is definitely expanding possibilities in homebrew dev.

well im not a psp fan(at all. DS and PC FTWR!!! though im trying to be possitive bout all platforms, and im getting there quite good)

but my friend has one and we're trying to get his thing custom firmware but we're afraid that it might get bricked coz there's a good possibility that it can...
though someone told me a while back that its easier to customise the psp now and if you still manage to brick it there are ways aswell. look in the super psp thread or pm one of the guys there...eg dablakmark8

Let see...

The DS is easier, yet more costly to setup, in terms of homebrew.

Once your handheld is homebrew enabled, the PSP has a greater range of homebrew apps, is easier to recover if you happen to brick your console & is ultimately more versatile in terms of, well, whatever you wanna do.

Also, the DS is prone to DS specific viruses. There aren't any such viruses for the PSP.

DS Games are smaller to download, but, seriously, unless you're a kid, don't support piracy.

Is it that much more?

With the DS I can't understand why anyone would choose to carry their original cartridges around with them unless they do not have a flashcart.

Don't forget the microphone. It does get used.

Install the custom firmware on the DS and it is effectively unbrickable.

When I bought mine the cost was about the same. Cost of flashcart plus SD card vs cost of memory stick.

A DS is brickable. There are viruses in the DS homebrew field though they are uncommon. There are other ways as well.
Essentially, it's easier to brick a PSP but it's just as easy to unbrick. It's more challenging to brick a DS and it's equally challenging to unbrick it.

I bought my R4 directly from Hong Kong which cost me ~R400 plus R150 for the SD card = ~R550
A 4GB memory stick for the PSP costs ~R350

Secondly, in terms of homebrew enabling, it's practically free for a PSP. A flashcart as such is not needed. For the DS a flashcart is necessary for homebrew

The DS has two sections of flash memory. One which can be written into at any time and by any software including trojans, and one which is protected and can only be written when you physically short two contacts inside the DS (i.e. poke a screwdriver inside the DS to make them touch).

When you install the custom firmware it puts a "recovery bootloader" into the protected section. This allows you to restore the DS if a trojan overwrites everything else.

Practically free so long as you know someone with a Pandora's Battery. Otherwise you're going to have to import that as well for around R120.

I found this very interesting, so I did a bit of googling on this. Apparently Darkfader, an avid homebrew developer created A (one) trojan in 2 flavours (a romloader app and hentai viewer) to prove that it is possible a few weeks after a trojan for PSP surfaced. Now I did not research this in detail, but it seems that your statement is in fact untrue. :p ;)

This is true, so unless you flashme'd (term???) your DS, a virus won't brick it, as it is unable to overwrite the firmware. It can however screw up you flashcart, but if it has a memory card, you can just reload the firmware. If not, you may be screwed.

yeah but you'll need that 4GBs
on the DS that will be more than enough.
i have a 2GB
i got about 15 games on plus music and pics, and there's space for more
still struggling with the video converter otherwise there wouldve been vids on aswell

@km2 - You definitely are more well equipped than me on the DS homebrew scene. Thus, I stand corrected. Thanks!
Secondly, you can mod your PSP without pandora if it's below 3.5 and, at grass root level, we usually pop over to a friend's to use his battery as a pandora. But that's, I suppose, a specific environment so, yeah, paying for a pandora seems like the most convenient, albeit, not the only, option out there.

@killraze - I'm somewhat active in the PSP homebrew scene and I've yet to encounter PSP specific viruses. But, perhaps they are out there.

@Dragonic - Don't confuse homebrew with pirating games. You can use the standard 32MB mem card with your PSP and still use a large number of homebrew apps out there.

If there's one thing that's killing handhelds, it's piracy.

lol i agree with noxibox, probably hurts developers, sure as hell dont hurt handhelds. and ironically the best Ninty games are made by, lol, Nintendo themselves.

Try googling PSP trojan, it definitely exist. It is however nothing to be worried about on either console, as it is a trojan, and not a virus, so if you don't download and run suspicious homebrew apps, you'll be perfectly safe.

I must agree that getting hombrew going on DS is a tad more expensive than on PSP, I bought my DS for R1400, M3 for R480, memcard for R300 and EZ flash 3in1 for R255, so it adds up to R2435 for me or R2835 if you buy the DS locally. This is opposed to R350 + R150 +R2000 for PSP. Definitely more expensive, but you pay for what you get hey? :D
