Hi guys

what do you think of this? i have psu that the fan is crazy loud, will it work if i disconnect that fan and mount/fix a more silent one to the psu??? it should work right?

Thanks

It can be done, only potential problem is that for the most part the connecters of the fan are soldered straigh into the PSU board.

Just remeber you will void your warrenty on the PSU.

I also recently has had the same issue with one of the fans in my PSU, opened it up pulled the fan out a little and sprayed a miniscule amount of Q20 (lubricant) onto the bearing. Since then it has gone back to it's quiet old self.

That is usually the case yes. But you can still rip out the old fan, put in a new one, then just plug it directly into your motherboard. :)

that will void my warranty will it not?

As soon as you open it, your warranty walks out the door yes. But weigh the options and their opportunity costs against each other.

Keep as as.
Pro - Keep Warranty
Con - Live with the noise
Cost: R0 + Con

Replace fan
Pro - Enjoy pure silence
Con - Lose Warranty you'll probably never need
Cost: <R200 + Con

Replace whole PSU
Pro - Enjoy pure silence + New warranty
Con - Cost
Cost: R400++

What PSU is this by the way? If it is some 12month old thing then you might as well perform this plastic surgery on the thing. Chances of the unit suddenly failing is very low.

the psu is a coolermaster extreme power 550w, its only a few days old.

Strange. A friend of mine also got a coolermaster extreme power 550w and called me a few months after getting it - thing is supposedly too loud for him. Still have not heard it for myself. You are the second person with that exact same PSU to complain about the fan in that unit that is a bit loud.

I'd return the PSU and get another one. Like a 600W or 460W or another make altogether. I run the coolermaster extreme power plus 460W without any hassles - dead silent.

What PC do you have? Does it really need a 600W monster to power it? Is this a new PSU you got for the one in your sig? (E6750,intel JHB MB,2gig 800,250gb SATA ,500gb external,32" LCD,9600gt,logitech z5500, xp pro)

You don't need 550W to power that thing. I run a Quad Q9300, intel FB MB, 4GB 800, 80GB IDE + 750GB SATA, HD4870, DVD rom all on my coolermaster extreme power plus 460W. You system should use much less power than mine unless that creative audigy zs2 is a power guzzler. I do not run my LCD screen through the PSU - get power directly from the mains.

Although a 460W PSU won't give you much future upgrade headroom :(
Planning any big upgrades in the next few years? :p

il most prob be adding more hard drives sooon hence why i got a bit of a beast :) its just so dam loud!!!

These days normal (new, SATA2 500GB+) HDDs are rated at needing about <20W of power at load so I would not be too worried about that. Nothing I can do about the noise the PSU makes though :(

wat fan could i replace it with that is nice and quiet??

I say just take the psu back and get a different brand. Simple easy and you get the warranty.

Same here, guess what my "beast" of a machine idles at? 109W when using the Asus EPU gear and normal without EPU enabled is 114W, the max I've ever done during gaming is 280W!

If you can just unplug the fan, easily you can change it. If the box is sealed you will void the warranty, i.e. if they can tell it's been opened. (If you can do it surreptitiously, and need to claim warranty, just put the old fan back in. :D)

You could just use a standard case fan like was said, plug into your mobo.

I've changed fans before in a PSU, just plugged it into one of the PSUs own 4-pin molex connectors.

AFAIK I was looking at those PSUs on newegg.com, lots of people complained of noise with them.
