So I have had my coolermaster silent 1000w for about 8 years now and recently i have started to notice my PSU fan randomly spiking and then back to normal. This comes and goes with varying fan speed. sometimes it sounds like a server under my desk.

When i started hearing this, i got all the dust out, but that didn't seem to help.

What i am wondering, is my PSU on its way out?

Any else had this issue before?

I doubt a failing psu would only make your fans spin up. PSU issues will usualy cause sudden reboots or BSOD crashes. You could also expect the pc to not power on or the fan will just switch when you press the power button and the nothing further.

Thanks for the advice. Like i said its random. One minute all quiet, next sounds like a server, then other times the fan just fluctuates. My machine itself is cool, or cool enough not to warrant the fan spinning up like that.

If the event the PSU went, what are the chances it could take other hardware with it?

Isn't it maybe just the fan that is going? To my knowledge it shouldn't happen and has never happened to me before. I'm not sure if you can replace the fan, but it is probably worth a try.

The load or temperature sensor controlling the fan is probably shot.

So is it worth while opening the PSU case and just fitting the fan switch to a m/b fan port?

Thanks again all!

Probably not the worst idea, but you're going to need to connect the fan to something you can control the speed with. Otherwise your machine will probably sound like a server 24/7, or at least for as long as the fan can sustain itself.
