PtP and torrents throttled??

Does Mweb/Telkom throttle Ptp downloads (Soulseek) and torrents? I suddenly get download speed less than 1 K p s while if I open TheRegister's website, it shoots up to about 60 K
 
yes, you most likely have a shaped account which means that certain ports are prioritised such as http, pop, smtp, etc and the rest especially p2p are shaped and limited quite heavily.

You shouldn't have a problem with torrents provided that you forward a port on your router and open a port in your firewall software/windows. A torrent port is normally randomised in the upper range, but it might help setting it to something like 21, 80, 8080.
 
whats your line speed? ..... Unshaped or shaped? You still shouldn't be getting speeds that low though.
 
just doublecheck that you haven't accidently lowered your d/load speed in Soulseek itself .... /me did that when a noob until it got pointed out to me :D

Afaik shaping is per protocol, not port - so you will always be shaped on non http p2p traffic... no matter what port it communicates on... correct me if I'm wrong.
It does, however, help to open the right ports on your router as you will have a more direct p2p connection - i.e. you won't be relayed... it doesn't help with shaping though afaik.

True.

I was intending to refer to a p2p/torrent etc. speed improvement.
 
Yeah, true it can be a huge improvement too - this works for skype as well since it is also P2P

How do I do this?

Just to give more info - when I downloaded with Vodacom 3G card. the download was fast (for SA). The moment I switched to Mweb ADSL the speed did an emergency stop.
 
Which router/modem do you use? You have to log in to it and change some settings.

There could very well be a guide for it here on MyBb. Use the Search function.
 
More intrigue. When I went on just now - again with Mwb - the speed was much better (still Soulseek). In the vicvinity of 27 K - in other words actually downloading. Is this speed fluctuations that we as South Africans must just chew and eat and nothing to be done about it?
I mean, I was hoping on Neotel. Ha ha! Suckered again.

The amount of people uploading (or their connection) what you're downloading can also cause lower speeds. :p
