Hey Guys,

Sorry if this topic has been discussed before, but couldn't find anything.

A little birdie told me the other day that "push to talk" (PTT) is imminent. This would be so usefull in my business. Does anyone have any further info on this?

Thanks in adavance

Dave

Vodacom have it running with VW and the police for about a year already. We are still in testing for release and should have it ready next month. I am not sure what the tariffs will be or if it will be for both contract and prepaid but can find out.

I am with MTN...

I wonder how it can be so expensive, voice doesn't use that much data does it? But I guess it's just another was of milking their customers.

I used Ptt in Israel for a long time and it was extremely cheap.
That doesnt surprise me - few countries are as consumer uncentric as SA.

PTT is using your phone like a Walkie-Talkie right? If so does it work across the whole network or only if you are connected to the same base station?

My dad has it in the states and uses it across the country. According to the link I posted above it can also be used internationally.

ah ... thanks. I didn't read the last section of the site. As soon as I saw the words 'Business Benefits' I translated them to 'Sales Pitch Follows' and didn't read further.

it would be interesting to get an estimated price for using this service...

I remember a cost of R100 per month for PTT on Vodacom - and you must add the datacost. Have a look at Fring - a Skype and Google Talk client, as an alternative. Vodacom and MTN could however charge up to R25/MB for VOIP.
