Public and Private Key in wordpress

I have a wordpress site running on linux through apache, I'm fairly new to this.

Wordpress is requesting a public/private key to apply plugins/themes, where and how is this generated?

Wordpress will ask for a ftp user/password to upload themes, not a public/private key.

Sounds fishy.

I should not do that.

What plugin are you working with specifically perhaps it's something like a google maps plugin asking for the maps API key?

Wordpress should never ask for a private/public key as that would give the plugin root access to your server, which is something you really don't want!
