PUBLIC DEBATE : Nuclear Energy

A nice comparison of radiation for you guys, Radiation dose .

I believe that nuclear is relatively safe, the only problem is that is that if things do go wrong they can have the potential to go horribly wrong, but as long as we do not take short cuts in the control systems put in place then everything should be OK.

The pro-nuclear lobby are saddling-up their spavined steeds, dusting-off their lances and donning their rusty armour ready for damage control battle. Nuclear is GOOD, everything else is BAD.

Worse still, at the current small contribution to the world's energy mix there's still plenty of uranium ore around that's cheap to mine. Expand the industry and we get to peak uranium, just like peak oil. Suddenly a renewable-based energy economy starts to make sense.

All of our energy sources impact on the environment to a lesser or greater extent. The obvious solution is to use the energy we have more efficiently and find ways to use less of it to do what we do. This comes down to economics and the way we measure wealth and prosperity.

I have a post in the sticky thread in Current Affairs ‘Escom & Electricity: Load shedding, etc. Post = Bio-fuels. I am pushing the bio-fuel option for SA. Check it out.

With what has happened lately in Japan one should seriously consider another source of energy. It is quite obvious that nuclear stuff was not to be messed with by man!

/facepalm

You know coal power kills more people than nuclear right? Guess we shouldnt mess with that either! And dams really stuff up local eco systems, say no to hydro! And wind turbines kill birdies, say no to wind!
Oh, cars also kill lots of people, lets not use those either!
While we're at it, lets not use anything dangerous!
