Public IP questions

Howsit guys,

I got a new client in recently and I was wondering if anyone perhaps knows what might be going on with this :

They have the same public IP assigned to their firewall as they do to their PBX machine. Everything is working fine, I'm trying to set something else up this just does not make sense. NATed environment is how they get the traffic to the correct machines.

They have 5 available public IPs, should each device not have it's own public IP then?

I should also add that both machines need to be public facing

It depends on the services they are hosting (conflicting ports etc), its highly possible you will be able to set up the entire company on one IP if you plan and configure it right. If its for remote access to work, you might want to look at a VPN setup and not direct NATs to inside machines. Im a bit confused about what your question really is (maybe pay a 3rd party to help you or give you advice).
 
I cant imagine why two separate external facing devices would both have the same IP?
One for the NAT device should be fine with everything being routed correctly. The PBX if it requires an external IP should be assigned one from the pool, assuming it cant be NAT'ed to.
 
That's a pretty normal setup. The Public IP is actually only configured on the external interface on the firewall and not the PBX as well. If that was the case things will not work.
PBX is behind the firewall, so port forwarding is setup on the firewall for that to work. Although it looks like both have the same IP from an external view, only the firewall has the IP configured and it forwards any requests to the PBX on a certain port to the internal PBX server.
 
@BosOtter This is how it should be yes, but on the firewall itself there's a rule that routes all traffic from WAN to that IP

ie Lets say the WAN IP on the firewall is 10.20.30.40
This rule says to forward all required ports to 10.20.30.40 with the intent of sending this traffic to the PBX, which it obviously does fine as the PBX works 100%

And the PBX, where's that plugged into the network?
Sounds like a strange setup, but cannot really work in the way you described with the same IP setup on both devices. Maybe a network drawing will help, if you really want to get down to how it's all setup.
 
generally, on a normal modem/router you need to disable NAT for the other devices on the network to have one of the public static IP addresses.

that public IP range becomes your "LAN" range for your devices/servers. with the first IP usually the router IP.
