Madonsela’s son ‘crashes’ state vehicle

Public Protector Thuli Madonsela on Thursday said she would subject herself to the internal processes of her office and allow the law to take its course in connection with a crash involving her state-owned vehicle.

Madonsela’s son, who is legally licensed to drive, escaped serious injury when he apparently crashed the car into the wall of a private home.

His mother was asleep at home at the time.

Madonsela said the incident was immediately reported to the Garsfontein Police Station.

It was unclear when her son would be expected to appear in court.

And kids always listen to parents when they say "Don't drive my car"

Good on her for "subjecting herself to the internal processes of her office" instead of denying it. Lets hope the law does run it's course.

She is there to help prevent this type of misuse of state resources, yet some how, her son is driving the car. We don't know how long he has been at it, so let's not call it a one-off yet.

Agreed. Kids muck around and steal their parents' cars now and then. It happens. Accidents also happen. Let the investigation come to a conclusion before getting all worked up.

Perhaps cars just don't simply crash themselves (a little bit of something contributes). It's a state car, not a family runabout.

Do you live on conspiracy theories by any chance?

Like has been said, son has a license... mom was sleeping and he "borrowed" the car and had a little bit of a mishap... she is not at fault if this is the scenario that plays out.

My dad had a GG car back when he used to work for the education department... My brother and I borrowed it a few times without asking, with and without our licenses.... My dad had told us never to drive it, but hell it was a car and just there begging to be used to go jolling sometimes.
 
This woman is awesome. Something goes wrong and she says "do it by the book". Well done to her.

Now now let us not stop Lounger from having his fun. He is practically hard at the thought of the Public Protector being human after all :D :p

Why do you guys always resort to the personal attacks when you don't like what the news brings? (moderator moderate)

This woman is not above the law as you seem to imply, and as she says, the law must take its course. By suggesting that we must overlook things simply because of her position or efficiency you are not helping her own cause.

Where in the 7 flaming hells has anybody said that the matter should be overlooked because of her position. People are praising her for following the letter of the law. Are you smoking something?

So you're saying my dad knew we borrowed the car when they were overseas rather than using our own cars?.....

Let me tell you a little secret... Parents know what their children MIGHT get up to, but they don't necessarily know for sure.

Have you asked him/them?
 
What is her department's policy on family using department-provided cars? That is the key here. If it was not allowed, some action should be taken. If it was - then no issue at all.

When I had a company car my wife was allowed to drive it...
