Hey Gents,

I’m excited to share that we’ve officially kicked off the project! We’ve successfully completed one of the outdoor access points (OA) in Menlo Park, Pretoria, specifically in 18th Street, with more deployments planned for next year. We’re working closely with the tower owners to ensure a steady and efficient rollout.

The objective isn’t to take over the market but to selectively provide stable and accessible public Wi-Fi in popular areas . Think of it as building a reliable platform, much like how MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators) operate, where other operators can plug in and provide services in the future.

The current speeds available are 15Mbps upload and download, with pricing set as follows:

• R18 per 1GB
• R149 for 10GB
• R199 for 25GB
  (30-day expiration on all data packages)

The access point in question is Wi-Fi 6 enabled and currently west-facing. We’re looking to add a south-facing unit as soon as possible.
There are still a few bugs, but the aim is to gather public feedback to help us refine the service. If you happen to be in the area (or even if you’re not), your feedback would be greatly appreciated—positive or negative!

Looking forward to expanding this initiative and creating a robust network in Pretoria.
Edit: atm there isn't a quick way to get the vouchers, working on the site as of next year as well as a sms system to expedite voucher purchasing. Just pop me a mailer will get you sorted. Oh and if you do happen to be in the area you do get 15min on us per day

Network Update: Pretoria CBD Goes Live!

We are excited to announce that Pretoria WISP is now live inside Pretoria CBD! This marks a soft launch phase, with our first live zone active around Burgers Park West.

The WiFi network name is: "GMi Open Access Wi-Fi"

While we're still testing and optimizing, this milestone represents a major step forward in breaking the barrier to affordable, sustainable internet access for all. As we expand, more zones will be added to create a true Open Access Network—premium in experience, yet accessible to the general public.

This model is also designed to support third-party vendors in the future, much like how MVNOs operate on mobile networks—offering an exciting opportunity for local partners to innovate and grow alongside us.

Important Notes
Usage Policy: The network is designed for light usage, such as browsing, checking emails, and social media. It's not intended for heavy activities like peer-to-peer file sharing or running a home Wi-Fi network.

We know we might not get everything perfect from the start, but we’re committed to improving quickly to ensure your experience is smooth, reliable, and future-focused.

Project Update – Pretoria WISP Public Wi-Fi (May – July 2025)

Over the last three months, we’ve been tracking how the network is being used, and the numbers are showing steady growth.

Uptake & Averages:

• User uptake has increased month-on-month with consistent repeat logins, our monthly connections are around 4-5 thousand unique logins.
• Average daily usage is climbing, with a clear split between light testers and heavier, returning users.
• Session lengths are growing, showing stronger reliance on the service for daily needs.

Network Access Update:
We’ve now opened the network further by introducing a limited-time 12-hour free access per day. This has already boosted activity and given more people a chance to experience the network before moving onto voucher-based usage.

The project remains stable at its current position, and we’ll continue to monitor uptake closely.
