My USB ports (two) died compltley and I always yanked.. but I doubt that was realated.

It still sucks for me though.. not having USB is terrible!

But yanking is fine i think. Works for me, never lost data, but i dont use a flash drive that frequently.

Used to just pull it out. Untill I did so on a win2k machine and all the files I had copied to it were corrupted, but still there. That was at an internet cafe, when I got home the files were corrupted and I wasted time as I had to go back.

So I prefer to be safe and not sorry ;)

Depending on the speed of the USB port and the flash drive, as well as the amount of data being saved and whether it is being copied (fast) or saved as part of a download (slow), the data might be cached, even although the save appears to be completed. If your machine is really busy, it might take a while for the cached data to be completely written.

If you yank it prior to the emptying of the cache, your data will be corrupted. If you eject it, all write operations are guaranteed to be completed before you get the OK to remove message.

So yank it if you like ...

IMHO you can yank it out as long as it is not actually writing to the drive. I have also had errors from interrupting a cut and paste but not from a copy and paste, again probably because it writes with cut and not with copy.
