Pupils with 25% being passed

why dont we give angie another standing ovation? how stupid are those people who did that. nothing to revere her for except screwing over generations to come. idiot...

Doubt it, you will find school shootings increasing in this country and it wont be the kids coming to school with guns, the parents will be the ones doing it.
 
My mothers a teacher, she says that at the endof the year she receives a sheet from the GDE with the expected pass rate and then she goes through the class lists adding 1 mark to each student continuously until the expected pass % is achieved. Not even worth hiring people with matric, my mother says they can't calculate there % on a test out of 50 (mark x 2) even with a calculator. They are also proud and vocal about the fact that their parents don't pay tax and that they don't understand the conflict between not paying tax and why the government won't give freely.

I as a parent don't get the apathy, if my child isn't succeeding I will see where I can help him with his homework etc... Our teachers were never to blame when I was in school it was us if our marks were low, you cannot always blame the teacher, there are textbooks etc and parents should be helping where they can.
 
At the school where my daughter teachers they failed a student who wasn't achieving 20%, the parents complained to our incompetent dept of education and they forced the school to push her up a grade, though they had to do a slight subject change. No failing these days, we raising a generation of imbeciles.

might help, but schools should be able to let *bad* kids be disqualified from going to that school... (let the bad kids become the parents problem, not the teachers (and other kids) problem.
 
Given the standard of students that were presented as the first year class when I was lecturing at Uni, I'm not suprised.

Passing means nothing if the standard is so low that you can't perform in the real world.
 
There is a big problem with the education, but what I saw as an even bigger problem is the line:

“The fact that the teachers refused to come through to lessons unless they were paid says it all.”

Personally, I am sick and tired of companies and bosses expecting staff to work for free. EVERYTHING keeps going up in life. in fact things go up much more than what your salary does every year. People always say that you have to do a job you enjoy (and that also allows bosses to pay you less cos you enjoy the job), but lets face it, 90% of people are not able to do the jobs they enjoy, you land up going into a job that well you are really just there to do the job as required and get paid. The employers of most companies do not care much about their employees and do not care to make the environment any better to work in. If i was in that kind of place as a teacher then why is it so wrong that they expect to be paid more to work a day of THEIR weekend. This is exactly the problem of the country, you gotta work many hours for free to not even be awarded decently at the end of the year and for the boss to land up telling you, you are stupid etc.. Pay your staff more and keep them earning more than the yearly increase of everything else and they will be happier and more will work weekends for free or even a lesser rate than they would if they were just able to get by each month.
 
No big deal, let them get all excited about it. University entrance requirements will just keep increasing.

Feel bad for the kids though, being given that false hope in the name of becoming a government statistic. We're breeding generations of morons by passing them for the sake of it being a pass.

University separates the men from the boys though. Even if they do get in, they'll soon be kicked out if they can't cope.

Government has set quotas for universities. The universities heavily relying on government subsidies have no choice. You can be sure that government is working at full tilt to ruin universities as well.

You don't become a teacher for the money. If you care about the kids, and how they perform, then you will make a plan to improve their marks, even if you have to work a few weekends to accomplish it.

If you work only for the money, then take up a profession that pays more (and/or overtime).

But herein lies the bigger problem that is going to hurt SA tremendously.

A prof that I'm well acquainted with told me this 5 years back. The education system is failing the whole of SA. Only a certain amount of various engineers or medical students, etc. gets allowed each year. With this joke for a pass rate and grading system many kids who got their marks adjusted (education BEE) take the opportunity away from willing and actual qualified candidates.
He went on to spew out a lot of figures, how many engineers completed their courses, medical students, etc. and it was quite shocking and sobering to see we are heading for a disaster.

The problem is where does this madness stop. Next thing gov't till be dictating how many students need to be getting pushed through and getting decrees.

SA is getting thicker by the day! :(

Thats the thing now days, if you are poor how do you go into something else? you cant just jump ship and go somewhere that pays more. Unfortunately teachers are in short these days and people get free bursaries to go become a teacher. Doesn't necessarily mean they actually want to teach. You are right though in saying you dont generally become a teacher unless its something you love and you care about the kids etc but not any more these days, now days it is atleast some form of income they are getting. It is now really hard to find a teacher that does actually care about the kids and doesn't think of it as just another job.

Its all easy to say well go into a proffession that pays more but its not as easy as just doing that. Especially cos you gotta be the right colour, have the right personality, have the right qualifications and the right experience to get the job.
