Purchasing a data bundle while on a top up contract?

Hey all,

So I dial *141*6# and try load a data bundle only to be told insufficient airtime? Yet I have plenty airtime left?

How do you load a data bundle whilst on a top up contract?

You can only use a certain % of your given airtime on data. You have to purchase moreairtime that's not part of your contact to get more data.

Included airtime cannot be used for data on MTN.

Mtn sux in that respect. I believe you can do that with vodacom but I might be wrong.

You buy prepaid airtime from fnb at 60c/mb and use their apn. Auto-topup of you want as well.

but 60c per MB is pretty expensive - considering that we're looking at R600.00 / GB

I was talking for pretty small data volumes like I use on my iPhone with wifi at home. Two phones being used on the same account and I rack up MAYBE R250 a month. Obviously if you're gonna be downloading lots there are better options... And there is no chance of oob shark attacks unless your apn mysteriously changes back to mtn.
