Is it a vaiable option to purchase Blue Ray movies overseas and if so are they region locked or will they be region free?

try http://www.cdwow.com. i've bought from them many times.
you can get region-locked and region-free discs from them. their prices are excellent compared to the local rip-offs and international delivery is totally free.
i've also not ever paid customs for my purchases.

Well I've noticed local pricing has come down. I know that DVD Rental stores now pay R105 and R155 per Blue Ray Title (price depends on distribution partner). Those are new release prices.

I would suggest you import a Region A Bluray player - you can get one from PriceJapan or from one of the US stores which handles region unlocked BD players (A and B). Google for them. There are some nice Panasonic BD players out. Region B selection (Europe and US) sucks vs Region A (USA and Japan).

If you use a PC, using AnyDVDHD will allow you to play any region bluray as long as you're not using a Panasonic Blu-ray BD drive. No-one has managed to crack Panasonic's Region protection.

If i have a ps3 does it still matter what region the blue ray movies are. Are one's from Hong Kong/ China ok?

Hong Kong is Region B. China is Region C. If you had a Japanese PS3 you'd be Region A. Region A is where the choice is as it includes America and the Japanese have a wide selection of BDs too (with Eng).

UK and SA ahve the same region. I shop from amazon.co.uk... much cheaper.

I too use amazon.co.uk .... I don't feel weary of handing my money over to them. I cannot say the same for other online stores.

Much better, but they do not belong to Ray so are just RAYS, not RAY'S ;)

My sister is coming back from Australia in a few months so I had a look at prices over there last week, and its not much cheaper at all with the exchange rate around 6,5. The cheapest you'll probably find is http://www.bluraysforeveryone.com/ but you just have to make sure you order region 2/B discs
