Purchasing decision - Mac vs PC (no trolling please)

Hey, it does the job - besides, she has an iPad mini retina and iPhone 5s so ja....

And next year that display will be going for year 6. And ancient DDR2 RAM?

You can rather buy her a brand new Haswell Core i3 machine with Windows 8.1, 1TB hard drive & 4GB RAM for R5000 and just install iTunes.

Just a quick search on Kalahari : http://www.kalahari.com/Technology/Asus-X551CA-15-6-Intel-Core-i3-Notebook_p_49212371

Ok, hard drive is 500GB and most probably 3rd Gen Core i3, but it's an Asus and it's R4999. ;)

The Core iX machines run circles around the old Core 2 Duo machines.

Spend R1680 for a Samsung 840 Evo 256GB SSD (add R1000 if you really want an 850 Pro) and you'll have a much faster machine than that one with that 500GB HDD for most things regular students use their machines for.

The i3 machines may be faster, but you won't notice that with a slow HDD vs a super fast SSD, unless you're doing some sort of CAD or 3D design work. And for that an i3 will also be hopelessly slow, an i7 would be needed.

I used my Core i3 at work and home, it performed like an absolute champ & it still does.

Not sure what manufacturer's hardware you are referring to, but if you must put "hopelessly slow" next to a Core i3 & Windows 7/8/8.1/Ubuntu 14.04/14.10, you have absolutely no clue what you're talking about.

This is becoming a bit rich, tell us about your Mac experience? Which ones have you owned?

Becoming a bit rich......yes, it's rich coming from you.

Please tell what has this got to do with anything that was discussed before?

So, you are only qualified to give suggestions for a well priced notebook if you have owned a Mac before? :p

Honestly, I am just going to ignore any blabbering from you in the future.

Zero then, I take it.

Which explains your general tone, and more importantly your lack of understanding of our much more cost effective suggestions for the OP, that would actually be faster than your twice-as-much suggestion.

You are basically bringing nothing to the table, you're telling us what one would expect to hear by an underpaid and under equipped salesman at a retail store who knows next to nothing but just wants to sell you something, hardly taking the customer into consideration.

It's something I developed a long time ago given your ignorant ways, works a treat on you, you have my support.

Ouch :erm:

You missed the part about CAD applications. Any sort of 3D rendering/design software will be very math/cpu intensive. An i3 will be very slow. It will be faster than a C2D but too slow for any meaningful use of modern software - that's why i5s and even i7s are around.

Your SSD and slow C2D CPU will beat your i3 and 5400 RPM 8MB cache drive for most things a general student would use them for, Office, Youtube, browsing.

Final Update:

Managed to snag 2 x 2gig sticks via Carbonite for R350.

Installed ram
Installed Hybrid Drive
Fresh install of Yosemite <-- painless :D
Time Machine restore <---painless :D

Ba da boom ba da bing! Macbook runs like a champion now.

Daughter very happy with her rejuvenated Macbook.

:D

Nice man.

Yeah I wish more people wouldn't disregard Macs by default.

Time Machine and Migration features are WAY AHEAD of any alternative.
