Hi All

I'm looking at purchasing a gaming console for my boys who is 9 and 13 respectively. It's a toss up between the PS3 and the Xbox360 + Kinect, and after reading various forums on deciding which console to go for, it really comes down to personal choice. I'm kinda leaning towards the Xbox + Kinect console (because of the Kinect features) and would just like anyone's views and experiences regarding the Kinect, for those of you who have played with it. Any views and experiences welcome:confused:

Thanks:D

Kinect is awesome, works very well. Great family fun. Just ensure that there are no obstructions between the camera and the person (coffee tables etc.).

You also need a bit of space for Kinect to function properly (as in distance from television to human). So it may not be ideal if you intend to have the console in their bedroom.

Also, learn to use and set up the parental controls on the device ;)

Yeah, Kinect needs a lot of space. Also consider controller size - PS3 is better for smaller hands.

the xbox + Kinect is awesome but they dont tell you about the space requerment :( if you have a decent size room, or can move the furniture around, it helps quite a lot. I saw that zoom atachement comming out soon might help
the nice thing about the kiect is you you buy that and no more acesorise unlike the ps3 move or nintendo wii, where you have to buy a second remote for player 2 and another nunchuck thingamambob :(

Is this JUST for gaming? If so, have a look to see what games are available on the different platforms. While most of the games on the market are multi-platform, each platform has its exclusives (Gran Turismo and Halo, to name two off the top of my head.) If your sons are dead set on playing Forza and you come home with a PS3, your name is gonna be mud.

If you want more than just gaming, then the PS3 has more capabilities than an XBox - such as blu-ray and wireless. May be relevant, may not be.

If the motion-detection portion of kinect is a big selling point for you, then consider a Wii. They're going cheap now and are great interactive fun.

As for the controller size, I wouldn't worry too much about it. My 9 yo son never complained about the size of the XBox controller. He actually prefers its feel to the PS3 controller.

Wow, thanks for all the replies, I didn't expect so many replies in such a short period. You guys must really love your gaming consoles. My kids enjoy FPS, car racing games, etc. but not any specific title in particular. Space is not a really concern as it will be in the living room, but my concern is more about the lag with kinect. I've read in other forums where players complain about the lag with some games, so my question is, is it really such an issue. The reason I'm leaning towards the Xbox is that I feel you get the best of both worlds, hardcore gaming with the Xbox 360 (FPS, motor racing, etc) and your family fun with the kinect. The size of the controllers shouldn't be a problem because when it comes to games, kids will adapt no matter what::). One of their cousins have a Wii and they really enjoy playing with it. The only opportunity they had playing with the kinect was at the shops like Game. They have tons of PC games but still running on a Pentium4, so it's either buy a new pc or buy a gaming console. Also what about the ROD problem, is that still an issue with the XBox consoles?

Xbox fan
More games than PS3, cheaper
and Halo and Gears of war for FPS, um... FTW

I love my xbox, and the games. And XBL doesn't get hacked, hahaha.

ROD is pretty much sorted, it was a major problem on the first gen consoles. You get a good warranty too. Mines still going 3.5years without a hitch. Can't help with Kinect though, dont have one.

Its all about personal choice, and whether you like the whole blu-ray thing. Its a big plus for the PS3.

Buy an Xbox 360. This is coming from a PS3 owner who sold his Xbox.

ps3 FTW. very versatile machine. gaming is brilliant. graphics amazing. can't comment on the xbox.

I had an xbox it broke I then got a ps3 my brother lives with me he is 15 he is a gaming addict and loves the ps3 way more then the xbox

Maybe find some time to pause and try out punctuation.

The controller size is not a problem, and less so if they don't get to make the comparison. I just know I get told the PS3 one is more comfortable to hold for long periods because it fits better in small hands. Xbox controller does have a nice solid, chunky feel though, and you can use ordinary rechargeable batteries.

You'll need about 2 metres between your TV and where you stand for Kinect; maybe a bit more if you want to play with two people. I noticed no lag when we played, although you do have to get used to the gestures/movements some games expect to work properly (it definitely was not the same as doing the motion to carry out the same action in the real world).

There is basically no ROD problem anymore.

Xbox has better wireless. I think pretty much the only extra on the PS3 now is the blu-ray.

I bought the PS3 as I have had a PSX and PS2, it was a natural progression and also being a big fan of Sony and not MS. I use it for games for me n my 5 year olkd, also to stream media from my PC (from the other room) and to watch TV/dvd. Used the savings for a dvd player and put in more to get something that's much more than just a dvd player. Also, no subscription for online gaming.
I love my PS3.

If that's the case, then it's just with certain games, not with the device itself. I have Kinect Sports, Kinect Adventures, Child of Eden, Kinect Joyride and Dance Central (for the wife)... no problem with lag on those.
