Hi Guys,

Anyone know if anyone is going to stock the new AppleTV in SA and if it has been jailbroken to play off samba and/or USB?

It's not even released yet, but Core won't stock it, in all likelihood, since the AppleTV is not getting an official release here until we have a proper iTunes Store. You're going to have to find an importer or import it yourself.

It might take a while to JB as well, because hackers haven't even had a look at it yet.

Also looking at getting something like this but only if they can jailbreak it to install xbmc.

I already have an HTPC running xbmc but want to purchase a "remote" so this could actually fill the gap nicely.
It would be ideal if this device could pick up an external drive and load movies from there, but what are the chances.

I have seen one running XMBC. Not the 1080 version, the current model. It was pulling media from an external drive like any htpc.

xmbc installer and how to are here

I stand corrected, but I am pretty certain that the mini USB port doesn't have USB host functionality. Can only access files off your network.

There's a tethered JB for it already

Precisely whatI'm doing as well..

I have HP Servers (not the Microserver) as backends and the ATV3/XBMC will be the front end....
nice cost-effective way of getting multiple front ends with the same functionality.

I've been waiting for the 1080p device. happy to stream off my network, but I dont want to have to convert everything for itunes.

My main concern is that I dont want to lose any quality at all, I have FULL 60gb+ blu rays that I want the most out off and my current HTPC does that but I have to use a mouse.
At the moment there is no downscaling , i don't lose any quality.

My garage is behind my the wall my TV is on, the htpc sits in the garage so it can make all the noise it likes.
But It would be ideal to have a frontend I can just flick a switch and control everything, instead of going into the garage and switching the pc on then waiting, then using a mouse.
Having an ipad 2 I can also make use of airplay.

I don't know if the new AppleTV will play those high-bitrate blu-ray rips. Maybe it will if it does get jailbroken, but I'm not sure..

You might wanna find another player that can handle it, I'm looking at the WD Live and Asus TV media players. I'm not sure about them either, but at least they support all the containers natively.

I'm guessing it should play your blu-ray rips fine. As long as it is gigabit wired of course. :)

Will have to put XBMC on it though, but absolutely worth it in any case.

Hi Guys,

Version 5 of the iOS Software for Apple TV 2 from what I understand has been jailbroken - but there is no untethered jailbreak yet. This means that everytime you turn the apple tv on you would have to jailbreak it again. Mind you - this is for Apple TV 2 - no info yet on Apple TV 3 since it isnt out yet.

I bought my Apple TV 2 from www.have2have.co.za - I am sure they will stock the ATV3 when it is released. There isnt much difference between the new and the old apart from the fact that it has a faster processor and officially supports 1080p. My ATV2 can do 1080p when it is jailbroken when using Plex Media Center.

I'll keep my htpc, the setup I want is.

Apple TV connected to Sony AMP
Sony AMP to LCD
HTPC sits in garage - powered off
HTPC networked to Apple TV.

When I power up the apple TV it must power up the pc as well via wake on lan.
At the moment I control the HTPV via wireless mouse which is ok, i prefer remote though.
Dont want some cheap TV plasticky HTPC remote.

I'm going to guess it should be fine. My TV can play bluray dumps (with makemkv, I'm talking the 20GB+ files), over 100mbit/s network, so dealing with the data rate is ok. Since the ATV does hardware x264 decoding, I imagine it should be fine with bluray rips, as long as they're a supported x264 profile.

I expect that by the time they're available in S.A., there will be a Handbrake update with the correct profiles :)
