Purchasing WhatsApp?

This month I bought Travian Gold, Blizzard pets, couple of SSL certificates and I just got charged for the product on my credit card.

What transaction charges are you talking about. If I buy apps using my credit card just that amount gets charged to my card, no other charges. What bank are you with?

The same here, no additional charges. I use virgin but I've heard absa asks ridiculous transaction costs

No credit card should be charging the client transaction charges.
All transaction charges are charged to the merchant (whoever you're paying)

Anyway, my whatsapp expires in november also, i installed in on my nokia but now im on android
When i first got whatsapp i remember seeing that the android, iphone and bb were free while the symbian was only free for a year.
Now it seems all are free only for a year :/

2 dollars is peanuts, but multiply that by a 12 million users (less than half of the actual number of users), and they have a nice income of 2 million dollars a month.

This is one of those "why didn't i think of that" moments :(

Credit card = retailer gets charged a fee
Cheque card = you get charged a fee

Some accounts allow a # of free transactions though so you might only get charged after a few tx

I was wondering the same i know its USD2 a year, i hope you can pay for it with your airtime of off your cell bill i dont mind paying that much for it, consiering what i saved, Mines is up in November this year so unless anyone is before me, ill tell you how i have to pay

Just checked now its been extended until May 2012 Nice :D

Mine says 2022 don't remember buying it lol...

But thy have an income for now, what happens when everyone's paid?

many users who use whatsapp in sa don't use credit cards,is possible to pay whatsapp via phone bill

Have you considered getting someone to buy it for you using their cc. Quick and easy.

why buy it when you don't have to yet?

i am unfamiliar with the actual technology behind whatsapp, but what prevents another similar service from springing up the moment they decide to charge?

I am almost inclined to just buy it now..even though mine only expires later in the year...kinda like a donation. They really have given us a great app and save us a lot of money. Shame...I mean...how do these guys actually make money? It is not like they dont have overheads...they have a server to run and staff to pay.

^ This x 1000... It's $0,99 in the iTunes App Store and that's around R8,00. Seriously, just buy the app.
