Hi,

I bought a Samsung Galaxy tab, and I'm so impressed with the thing, that I'm thinking of giving up my blackberry for Android.

However, I decided to do a quick test today and was sorely disappointed.

I sent myself an email from one of my other email accounts and waited to see how long each device would take to push the email through. I did this twice. (I use a gmail account)

Blackberry - Both times, it pushed the email instantly. Literally a few seconds after pressing the send button, the email was on my phone
Samsung Tab - The first time took 11 minutes. The 2nd time took 12 minutes. I used the Gmail app.

Instant email push is extremely important for me, and the amount of time the Tab took is far too long.

I'm sure I must be doing something wrong as it doesn't make sense that it wouldn't push just as fast as my blackberry does.

Can anyone advise what I can do to fix it, if there even is a fix?

Thanks

Google and Android releI ased push on the Android OS with FroYo last year. I however am still to see this "push" service in action also. My mails can take up to 40 minutes to come through, unless I manually refresh. I have tried everything...from hard resetting to clearing the cache blah blah. The push service on Android is C2DM or "Cloud to Device Messaging". WhatsApp will utilize this also to push their messages to your device. Well, it does not actually push the message...it sends a short little handshake to your phone if you will to let it know there is a new message on the server...and only then does your phone fetch it.

I am however not convinced that this is a working service. And I am starting to wonder if C2DM is not perhaps also responsible for my WhatsApp delays etc which can also be delayed by 40 minutes sometimes.

Dont get me wrong...I love Android...but so far the push on it sucks. Not everyone seems to be having this problem though. Just my experience with it...one that we seem to share.

Can't help you on this one...just do a search... there was a thread very recently.

There should be a fix.

On my HTC Desire my e-mails get pushed through to my device even before it arrives at my computers GMail inbox.

EDIT: Yes is was Mr Ockie that made the original post.

I'm lucky that mine works fine!

I experienced the same thing when I got my phone. I figured out how to do it but have since turned it of again. Try going to Settings > accounts and sync > autosync. Turn it on. Let me know if it works.

This may seem like a stupid question but are you sending the test emails directly to your gmail account or does your gmail account fetch the emails via pop from another account? If the latter is the case it is worthwhile to note that Gmail pop only syncs at about 10 min intervals (depending on how many emails you receive)

Dont know about OP...but my gmail does not fetch from other accounts via POP. Mine is on IMAP and I send my test mails directly to my gmail account. All my sync boxes are ticked and background data is active with no power saving mode enabled.

Hi, OP here. I'm sending from my google apps account on my PC directly to my gmail account. No POP3 in between. Also, remember that my BB is receiving the email instantly, whereas my android tab isn't. (Mind you, I also did a test on a friend's iphone 4, and the email came through in less than 30 seconds).
All sync options are enabled in my settings.

@ocleroux - did u update the firmware at all? I did upgrade to Gingerbread... I hope that didn't cause something to go haywire in the sync settings?

Nope....I am using the Motorola Defy stock FroYo. No funny business on my precious!

I am glad to hear that this is not a issue related only to Froyo or to Motorola. Does seem to be a Android issue. Some are affected...some not. :-(

Don't know why this is happening to you guys. I've never had this issue on any of my Android phones.

Above is correct. You have to activate autosync.

Maybe there is something wrong with our Google accounts that it is not actually putting us on the C2DM server? The question is...how do you contact Google for support? They apparently have no support what so ever....or that is what I heard. If something goes wrong..you screwed? Have any of you guys had any experience with Google support?

I have posted the problem on there somewhere before when I posted the same question here on mybb. I marked it to send me a email once someone replies...NOTHING!

Do you guys know if they have a support email where a google representitive will actually read the question and not just get browsed by random people?

Dang, sorry bud. No idea. Maybe contact Motorola?

OP here. I updated the gmail client on my tab, and restarted the device. (I also cleared the cache). After doing that, I now get emails instantly around 90% of the time (takes 5 seconds longer than my blackberry). But I still get that 10% which is taking over 10 mins to arrive, so the problem is not totally solved :(

Btw, whatsapp works perfectly - messages are always instant..

Well...here is my new thread I created. Got a bit hot under the collar...but what can I say...I am frustrated!!!

Always include:

Device: MOTOROLA DEFY
Carrier: CELL C
Country / Language: SOUTH AFRICA ENGLISH
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable): ANDROID 2.2.2

Good day. Please can a google rep contact me????? I simply can not get my push service to work on my phone. I am now starting to wonder if my C2DM service is actually provisioned or something. I have now tried everything.

1. Done a hard reset of the phone and set up my Gmail again.
2. Checked that back ground data is enabled
3. Checked that the sync boxes for my mail, contacts and calender is ticked.
4. Checked that no battery or data saving mode is enabled.
5. Cleared tha cache of gmail as instructed by Motorola Forums.

Nothing works!!!!!! I have checked on the net and there are others that are having similar problems with different makes and models than me. I am now also starting to wonder if it is perhaps because of C2DM that my whatsapp messages are so often delayed also. I will most of the time only get my Gmail and whatsapp messages 40 minutes after it was sent....specially if my screen is off and I am not actively using the phone.

PLEASE GOOGLE....HELP!!! This is your service...your email service...your OS....your push server......it is time you offer support on it!!!!!!

Glad to hear you've made some progress. I've always gotten emails on my phone before getting them on pc with a gmail window open and everything.

I did make a thread there! The silence is deafening! If you ask me...Google must fcking support it. As I put in my post on their forums just now.
