I don't think SA needed beg for anything from Russia as that country's influence on world politics has been diminished since the fall of the Soviet Union.

Don't be fooled (by american propaganda) - my thumbsuck: russia today is as big as america (even with the sloughing of the border states.) Russia today holds the economic well-being of Europe in the palm of its hand - Russia was gutted economically and militarily by their defunct ideology - but since the upgrade to "free market capitalism" and further enhancement with "Putinism" russia is well on its way to re-asserting itself in the world (Stalinism Version 3) - hence the SA trip and various other moves afoot worldwide to re-impose their hegemony, and influence on 'the new world order.'

As Kruschev once remarked "The West will sell us the rope we will use to hang them. ...

This point can be debated between international scholars, I still contend that Russia does not carry any considerable sway ecnomically or militarily over any part of the world...they still might have political influence but that is also waning as they seem to be experts, along with the Chinese, at fence-sitting. China is the new economic superpower and more attention should be paid when Hu Jintao visits South Africa.
