My father has a PVR and wants to "transfer" some of the stuff off the PVR and save it so he can clean it up.

Ok... yes I know this is impossible but has anyone managed to use a dvd writer to record stuff off a PVR either on to a DVD or hard drive ? Any recomendations on a spesific device ?

Any device that has a RCA input... Recording will be in real time though. 2 hour movie will take 2 hours to record. And you can't watch anything else while doing it. Well, he can if he has a dual view PVR... you know what I mean...

Ye, I realise that.

But has anyone used a spesific device. Also the DVD writers with a HDD, can you copy stuff off these things or do you have to write to DVD ?

+1 real time unfortunately. I play from my DSTV PVR, record with my mVix PVR, transfer the mVix files to PC if I want, convert to divx.

You have to write to Dvd - I have an LG HDD/DVD writer and I record from my PVR to the LG and then write to DVD. If you're watching the show at the same time then at least you can skip ads on the recording. Alternatively, I'll leave it to record just before going to bed, because as stated, while it's recording you can do nothing else.

Would be nice though if we could plug in a USB device and copy off a show, wouldn't it?

I use a series 1 Tivo as my PVR. From there I transfer it to the pc, then edit the show to take out all the ads. And from there I make it into a dvd using Ulead dvd movie factory 6. Works very well.

ok so guys how is the quality you get from SD tv? i record directly onto dvd and the quality is okish....how is your quality
