PVR time shift

It tells you that you can set the time it takes before going into standby in the PVR menu but there's no such option there.

I can't even if I wanted to. It goes on standby on it's own after a period of inactivity.

If yes then:
Menu > Personalise > Automatic Standby

unless the sd pvr had the ability to just turn the HDD or PVR function only off - really trying hard to remember here it did have something like that

It might be hard-coded into the device but there is not a selectable option as on the HD-PVR
