I wanted an E8400 but settled for an E7400 as there was no stock & I was impatient. Just found out the E7400 doesn't support hardware virtualization so i'm looking to trade up, but el cheepo.

Would you still consider a Q6600 or are they past their prime? The other Q's with the same rep as the Q6600 are expensive. Does it matter if its a GO stepping version or not - I'm not planning to overclock?

Anyone interested in the E7400, 2 months old, standard, not been overclocked?

Thx

what would be a good upgrade from the Q6600 intel wise ?

i was stupid and still am. last year i bought a q9400 for gaming purposes then after was told that the q6600 was 2k cheaper AND better for games:mad:

Yeah, but back then almost all games were optimised for dualies, now the games are moving towards supporting quad cores

The Q9450 will be like a 5% improvement in performance over the Q6600, the Q9300 is just about equal to or VERY slightly better than the Q6600. Thats why i said the Q9450 would be a worthwhile upgrade, especially if you use programs that use SSE4

/Don't quote me on this :)

You can get a 2nd hand Q6600 for round R1.2k these days.. Q9550 round R1.7k..

lol i bought a q6600 a year ago, 2nd hand for around 2K (on this very same forum) - and even then it was a bit old for it's time, lol.....

......and it still runs awesomely today!
I made sure it was the GO stepping version though....

but yeah - it's very old by now!

this tells me cpu isn't that important these days - gfx is.

Yeah, the Q6600 is a strong cpu, ocs nicely and remains cool too. It was released in 2006 iirc and can still handle everything out there. Pretty good imo

With the new ati 5 series it seems the cpus have to improve quite a bit to fully utilise those cards
