Has anyone ever used the QNap Storage Devices?

There are about 15 different ones from what I can tell, and only slight differences between them.

I'm looking into getting one, and would appreciate feedback from anyone who has had to choose between them all and/or used any of them at all.

TIA!

QNAP TS-410

I've actually bought my first QNAP device last week. I've decided on the QNAP TS-410 as it was the best value for money and I dont see why I need the extra processing power of the more expensive models. So far my experience has been excellent - I've installed 4x Seagate ST2000DL003 2TB drives and configured RAID-5, which gives me about 5.5TB of usable drive capacity. The device is very quit - I sleep in the same room where the device is operating without problem. The web interface is very intuitive and responsive. I've tested some 1080p content streaming to an AC Ryan media player and it worked perfectly. Next I want to test Hyper-V failover clustering by using the device's iSCSI functionality and also need to test the Surveillance Station functionality with some IP cameras.

If you like to tinker look at the HP microserver! Best value for money around! Can pick one up for under R1400. Add your favourite server software (freeNAS works quite well on it too) and your off.

I received a promo email yesterday from one of the distributors, and the HP microserver had a great price.

Would the FreeNAS software work as well and as simply as the QNAP software? I always prefer open-source wherever viable!

Axiz maybe?

Maybe not as simply as the QNAP sofware...never used QNAP before but FreeNAS does have an appliance sort of feel to it. Everything's done via the webGUI. Its in a bit of a transition at the moment between version 7 and 8. At the moment none of the extra apps(bit torrent, SABnzb, couch potato...) are available for 8 but here's a comparison chart if you're interested. http://www.freenas.org/category/version-comparison and here's the "roadmap for 8.1"

If you're comfortable with it a straight linux server that would work quite well too (or desktop linux but the RAID is all command-line but not very hard to do, lots of guides out there!) or windows server but that costs $$$ although might still work out cheaper than the QNAP. Apparently WHS works quite well and is easy to use!

There's a thread on the microserver on mybb
