Do any of you people ever get that irritating lag when trying to play a game when a family member inside your home starts surfing the web? I would guess there isnt anybody that doesnt know it :)

Most routers you can buy these days all have a special feature built into it called QoS (Quality of service). This feature basically enables your router to control traffic on your home network that flows to your isp. It can be very usefull for prioritizing traffic to enable games data packets to be more important then p2p traffic.

Now for my question :P, does anyone know where to find a guide or site which might explain how to use this service on your router?

The problem is with google, only selected few routers have any explanation:(
I have a Dlink 2500U single ethernet port router, and a Telkom MEGA-105WR.
Both have QoS in the configuration menu but its so complicated and without good explanations of what the fields are used for.

This would be even nicer if there was some sort of example to go on, for example, scype configuration that has high priority vs browsing low priority

More on QoS : here and here

QoS

Most routers allow you to classify traffic and then prioritize it, which means putting it in queues. In some cases, you can specify the source and destination IP addresses of the traffic too.

Do you know what ports the game uses? Some routers actually have preset games and applications that you can select, this also applies to the built-in firewall.

Setting up QoS is not too difficult, but you will need to know the ports or source / destination addresses. Usually prioritizing with a combination of both is best, but you can prioritize just your game above all other traffic.

Bearing in mind though, that QoS does add overhead to and typical QoS implementations are ineffecient on links with less than 10mbps of bandwidth.
