So I've been playing with the idea lately to get me and my wife quad bikes. This is just for casual biking on not so difficult roads, then we take the kids along, wife and me can take some scenic photos, and what ever more. Just to get out and do something, other than work and shopping.

So where do one start? I've seen the brand name bikes are very expensive. I know these chinese brands are a no-go, but I know khymco a bit, and know that it is good quality. The only downside I see, is they dont have a 4x4 model. But again, is that so important to have?

So, what are your ideas, and opinions?

Thanks

Lets say l cant see me paying R110 000 for a brand name bike for playing. But when I buy early next year I can spend in the area of R150 000 for quads, thats what I budgeted for anyway.

Well here in Joeburg there is a Bambardier DS650X with trailer going for R35 000, that is very cheap BTW.

A 4x4 quad is for very rough terrain and for things like crossing rivers and such, but if its for moderate bumps and mud then RWD is fine.

Also must they be Auto or manual?

I will be able to drive a manual model, but not my wife, I dont want to complicate things for her. I would actually like a 4x4 one, just for the one time I want to push it a bit....

Quads are death traps, rather get a bike, when you come off a bike you go one way and it goes another, a quad tends to "follow" and roll over you. I know this opinion is unpopular amoung some but I knew 3 people who were killed in this manor, one of the guys in front of about 10 kids in front of his house

True, but I think its safer to lift a kid on a quad than on a bike, one kid is 4, so not really old enough for a 2 wheeler. I'm also more a 2 wheeler guy, but I do it for the kids.

Rather get them a little 50cc, they are so small they barely make it up to my knees, besides weed wackers come with as much power these days, just teach them to respect the bike

i have a bmw dakar that i take off road from time to time.
i have come off more times than i care to remember, however the worst injury has been the occasional exhaust burn.
on a two wheeler, it is quick & easy enough to lift it & slide away from under it, i'm not so sure about a 4 wheeler tho.

as for "brand" or non brand names, go for the more expensive "brand" name. they are designed & built with materials suited to the task at hand, not copied using cheap components - long term you are sure to be better off.

In all honesty I doubt he will be going full throttle, so dying shoulnt be a problem.

It doesn't take full throttle to "p0es af" and seriously injure yourself on either a bike or especially a quad, those things roll too easily

Why quads?

Why don't you get two-wheeled offroad motorcycles that you can at least use legally on the road as well?

It's a lot of money to burn on "leisure" items that you can't use in the real world. Also they are statistically more dangerous than 2-wheeled bikes as crazy as that might sound.

LOL, so much LOL.

This is the same logic that guys who ride bikes with shorts and tshirts have because "I'm just going to the job, not very far".

It's circumstances that kill you and bad preparation, not whether you are going full throttle or not.

You can die at 20km/h if a quad rolls over you and breaks your neck.

Your ignorance (which is quite apparent from your statement) is what's going to kill you, not the full throttle.

As I wrote in my first post, its going to be a family thing, me, my wife and 2 kids. First my wife wont do a 2 wheeler, and secondly, I dont really want to lift my 3 year old son on a 2 wheeler, rather then drive more responsible on a 4 wheeler, and my wife will also have to lift our 6 year old daughter. Look we're not going to climb mountains wiyh these bikes, just casual off road driving, thats all.

In that case I would highly recommend not buying but "renting" instead.

Find a place that does quad bike adventure tours in your area (I'm sure there must be) and rather pay the daily fees to do that.

You'd need to do probably 50-100 trips to make up the purchase cost of your own quads, never mind the maintenance and such.

It's not worth owning a leisure item like this.

Makes sense yes, will have a look what this cost too.
