A friend got me onto the idea recently of Building my own Quad Copter so I thought I would post it here to share and get some assistance with the build.

I bought the below starter kit from http://flyingrobot.co/

They have 2 options, DIY or pre-built so I went for the DIY one as learning to build it is half the fun and R500 cheaper.

I ordered the kit on a Friday morning and it arrived the Monday. Quick turn around and pleasant service. :)

The kit:

The Transmitter (remote control) I bought extra which cost R1500

After visiting my friend for some advice I made a list of all the small things I'm going to need:

  • Heat Shrink
  • Red and Black Cable
  • Soldering Iron
  • Pliers
  • Allen Keys
  • Solder
  • Cable Ties

Its cost roughly R500 which means it worked out to the same as buying the pre-built one accept that I get to keep the tools.

Okey. some tips.

ECS's must be calibrated to match each other.
props are diagonal mounted same type. 2 clockwise and 2 counter clockwise.
mount kill switch in safe position for easy access to kill motors manually. DONT RELY ON REMOTE KILL AS SOME PEOPLE HAVE LOST VITAL BODY PARTS!!!!!!!!!
This is a beautyfull and expensive hobby. Good luck and have fun. Be safe.

Thanks man that is some good advice never even thought them to be dangerous.

Those are direct drive props. a 1Kv motor spins 1000RPM per volt. that is 11.1v * 1000 = 11100 RPM on 3s lipo battery. at that speed any soft prop becomes your worst nightmare.

You almost had me going out to buy one...then I saw that soldering iron.

I can't solder for schit! :D

I started building last night but the wire I bought is too thick so I'm buying some more today.

Awesome! Let me know if you have any questions? I can always help :)

I guess you saw increased traffic from this thread? ;)

I have a question, I need to choose between the FPV200L and the ZMR250. I understand the ZMR250 is lighter, but is that about it? Not sure if I should save R400 now, or if I will regret it later.

Also, I have a Honeybee king remote, which I assume I can use?

Spoke to Alan, from FlyingRobot, I'm going with the FPV200L, as I can always upgrade to the ZMR250 frame at a later date. Nice guy, and checkout was painless.
