Hi all. I'm looking to buy a new CPU for the upcoming Bad Company 2, as from what I know my Dual Core won't cut it. My budget for the CPU itself will be no more than R1400. Please could I get some advice! I'm currently looking at the Phenom II x3 720.

I know its a tri-core, but the performance is outstanding. Check some benchmarks on it. My current system specs are AMD athlon 5200+ 2.7 - 512k L2, 9800gtx+ 512mb, 3 gigs DDR 2 800.

If gaming is the argument for Intel processors, someone needs to go back and re-examine the performance.
I laughed at that part :P

And your thread title asks to recommend a quad core .

What mobo do you have? Then we'll know what the best cpu that you can upgrade to is.

Going i5 would be foolish if you currently have an AMD system that will support the new quads that are out there.

I don't have a future proofed mobo. It's an AM2 only board . My thread title asks to recommend a quad core, because generally they are supposedly the best performing. If I can't find a better quad core then that tri core, then I'll probably go with the tri core. the i5 is 2k, which I don't have. I don't want the i5 nor the i7, as they our way over my budget limit. It's really interesting how people love even numbers as to odd, regardless.

Thanks Killadoob, I did have a look and im still exploring my options.

Another thing I should point out is that I want to buy a cpu that will perform well in bad company 2, however that's not the only game I will be play with it.

The processor you want is the Athlon II 630. It's a 2.7Ghz quad. Should be well in budget too.

a bit off topic, but why wouldn't a dual core cut it? i thought the min specs was something like 2ghz dual

Because bad company is being optimized for quads.

Anyway I just saw today that the 630 is actually 2.8Ghz not 2.7.

A dual core can run BC2 fine.
I'd look for an i5/7.

They are really good CPU's from what I've heard.
