So I heard something interested on the radio, and it got me thinking: any job seeker has to be properly qualified in their field when applying for a position. What qualifications do politicians have? I mean, surely some course has to be completed to RUN A COUNTRY? Or at least a matric? It's extremely difficult to get even menial jobs without the latter, so what makes a politician the exception for possibly the most important job in the country? What message does that send to the people? Don't bother with school: you could always just become a politician...

Are they trained after being appointed, or do they just wing it?

Reminds me of the Gauteng MEC for transport on 702, saying we shouldn't be too hard on the (then) new transport minister as he's learning as he goes along. Presenter was like "...what?". He replies: "Yes, we all are." They clearly don't think they need qualifications.
